Is it a full moon shining, or lightning from Yemen?

Is it dawn’s light, spreading far and wide?

Umayma, or is it your brow amid the night,

Appearing to us, to enrich the pearls?

And your cheek—or the clarity of a rain-cloud’s pool?

And your mouth—or chrysanthemums bursting into bloom?

And the sword of the glance—or a keen blade? Yet

Both swords are keen; India’s is feeble.

And that rump—or a sand mound on a curving sand ridge?

Is it your branch within the cloak, or a bān-tree shoot?

You drank love through me, and lowered my

Place of patching [wording unclear], then raised my standing.

At the mention of fair women, just before mention

Of Mayya, I was divided in heart.

And Mayy kept me from mentioning the fair women,

Delicate in their third and second lute strings.

And had our sanctuary been someone other than her,

It would not have held the reins back from the fair women.

My heart drove me to love poetry about her,

And through love poetry I became as it called me to be.

And when it persisted in love poetry about her,

And I said, ‘May your mother lose you! Leave this!’—it disobeyed me.
