You are the model for every free, truthful man

who refuses to take vacillation in affairs as his path.

    إنّي أراك إمامَها المأمولا

    Rise over Egypt's horizons as a guide;

indeed, I see you as its hoped-for leader.

The leaders have indeed abandoned you at a post

where the legatee stood, guarding the thicket.

You find the Prophet ranging through its turmoil,

and see Gabriel along its bounds.

They described you as a weak, solitary man, yet we

indeed see you alone as a nation and a tribe.

And we deem the misguided champions of falsehood—even if they

    outnumber the grains of sand—few.

You revived the country's constitution, but it was left

slain by the meddling of the faithful guardians.

    فَانْظُرْ أَتدرِكُ نعشَهُ المحمولا

    The martyr was borne on the necks of those who shot him;

so look: can you reach his bier as it is carried?

You are to blame: you placed in their right hands,

    after defeat, your polished sword.

And from bygone ages you brought back an educator,

a free man, to teach their age and generation.

And a people is most wretched through its learning

if its morals are corrupt and its minds go astray.

O Amin, you have given the cause its due,

and judged it with your well-received judgment,

and prescribed for the leaders a creed of guidance

that effaces hypocrisy and eradicates deception.

A creed under whose precepts right seeks refuge

in might, in earnest, and in prolonged struggle.

The mother of grave sins in it is for a young man to feel

despair, and to enter the struggle weary of it.

And utter unbelief is for him to bargain with his foe,

seeking an alternative to grave peril.

And the foe gives you nothing of his scant store

unless he takes a lavish gift in return.

Is it written in your book that its rights can be won

by a people that deems demanding rights superfluous,

and is terrified at the mention of life, as though

out of fear, it finds life to be a ghoul?
