غَوىwent astray الناسthe people حَتّىuntil لاno صَوابٌright judgment وَلاand no رُشدُright guidance
وَضلّواand they strayed فَلاso no رُسلٌmessengers تُطاعُare obeyed وَلاand no جُندُtroops
People have gone astray until there is neither right judgment nor guidance.
People went astray, no right or guidance remained,
And they have strayed: no messengers are obeyed, nor troops.
They lost the way, no messengers obeyed, no armies stood.
إِذاif كُنتَyou are فيin أَمرِthe matter of النُفوسِhuman souls مُشاوراًseeking counsel
فَماthen no لَكَfor you مِنfrom سَيفٍa sword تُشاوِرهُyou consult it بُدُّescape
If you seek counsel concerning human souls,
If you consult souls in matters,
Then you cannot do without a sword to consult.
What sword have you to consult?
وَإِنّكand indeed you إِنif أَمعنتَyou delve deeply فيinto نقدِهاcriticizing them اِنتَهىcame to an end
بِكَfor you الأَمَدُthe span of time الأَقصىthe utmost وَلمand did not يَنتهِend النَقدُthe criticism
And indeed, if you delve deeply into criticizing them, you reach
If you examine them thoroughly,
The utmost limit of your life, yet the criticism does not end.
The end of all time will come and the examination will not end.
وَماand not زِلتُI ceased بِالدُنياin the world أَعدُّI count ذُنوبَهاits sins
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَناهَتreached its limit هِمّتيmy resolve وَانقَضىand ended العَدُّthe counting
And I kept counting the world's sins,
I go on counting the sins of this world
Until my resolve reached its limit and the counting ended.
Until my ambition ran out and counting ceased.
بُلِيتُI was afflicted بِمَنwith one who تفريrend الزَواجرُthe rebukes سَمعَهُhis hearing
فَيَطغىso he rebels وَترميهِand strike him العِظاتُthe exhortations فَيشتدُّso he grows fiercer
I was plagued by one whose ears rebukes rend,
I suffered from one who turns his hearing from deterrents,
Yet he rebels; exhortations strike him, and he grows fiercer.
So he transgresses, and preaching makes him more stubborn.
يَقولُsay غُواةُthe misguided الناسِamong people مَجدٌglory وَسُؤدُدٌand eminence
وَلاand no سُؤددٌeminence فيماin what بَداappeared ليto me وَلاand no مَجدُglory
The misguided among people speak of glory and eminence,
The misguided say, "Glory and power!"
Yet there is no eminence, as I see it, nor glory.
But I see no power or glory.
أَرىI see الناسَthe people أَنداداًequals وَلاand no مَجدَglory لامرئٍfor a man
إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنhe is كَالدَهرِlike Time لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor him نِدُّa peer
I see people as equals, and no man has glory
I see people as equals, glory belongs to no man
Unless he is like Time, without a peer.
Unless, like fate itself, he has no match.
بِذلكby that أَقضيI judge فيconcerning الصديقِthe friend وَفيand concerning العِدىthe enemies
وَمِثليَand one like me يَدريknows ماwhat العداوةُenmity وَالوُدُّand affection
By that I judge both friend and foe,
By this I judge both friend and foe,
And one like me knows what enmity and affection are.
And one like me knows enmity and love.
نَماgrew in number الناسthe people حَوليaround me مِنof مُحِبٍّone who loves وَحاقدٍand one who bears a grudge
فَماso no غَرَّنيdeceived me حُبٌّlove وَلاnor هاجَنيprovoked me حِقدُhatred
People multiplied around me, loving and resentful;
People slept around me, both loving and hating,
Yet no love deceived me, nor did hatred provoke me.
But no love misguided me, no hate perturbed me.
بَنيsons of النيلِthe Nile إِنّيindeed I لاnot أَرىsee فيهِin it مُفرَداًa peerless individual
وَلاnor أَدّعيI claim أَنّيthat I بِهِin it الشاعرُthe poet الفَردُthe peerless one
Sons of the Nile, indeed I see no peerless man there,
My Nile folk! I see none singled out among you,
Nor do I claim to be its peerless poet.
Nor claim to be the unique poet.
وَلَيسَand is not بِناءُthe edifice المَجدِof glory فيكُمamong you بِقائِمٍstanding
مَدىthroughout الدَهرِthe ages وَالأَخلاقُwhile morals تَهويfall وَتنهدُّand collapse
Nor will the edifice of glory among you stand
Building lasting glory among you is not established
Through the ages while morals fall and crumble.
Throughout time, morals come and go.
كَفىsuffices الدَهرَTime عَتباًas reproach ياO بَنيsons of النيلِthe Nile أَنَّهُthat it
مَجالُan arena حَياةٍof life للمالكِfor the master أَوor لَحدُa grave
It is reproach enough for Time, sons of the Nile, that it
Blaming fate is enough, my Nile folk, that it
Is an arena of life for the master, or a grave.
Allows a lifetime to ruler and serf alike.
عَتبتُمyou reproached عَلىagainst الأَيّامِthe days وَهيَwhile they كَعهدِهاas they have always been
فَلاso do not تعتبُواreproach حَتّىuntil يَدومَendures لَكُمfor you عَهدُa pledge
You reproached the days, though they are as they have always been;
You blame the days though they are ever the same,
So do not reproach them until a pledge of yours endures.
So do not blame till your days remain the same.
وَإِنand if وَثَبَleaps الضرغامُthe lion لِلصَيدِto hunt عادِياًrunning

فَلاthen do not تَعجبواmarvel أَيُّwhich الضَراغمِof the lions لاnot يَعدوgives chase
And if the lion leaps, rushing after prey,
If the hyena springs to prey recklessly,
Do not marvel: what lion does not give chase?
Do not wonder which hyena does not prey.

Nor, before Dahis, were they taken up for sport:
Flat plains and marked pastures were not made by Dahis
The slender, keen blades and the marked, sleek steeds.
For sport before,

Sons of the Nile, be earnest in your pursuits, and be sincere;
My Nile folk, be resolute in demands and truthful,
For there is no glory until resolve and striving are true.
No glory without resolve and truth.

It is such martial might that the tawny lion bolts,
Courage until the lion recoils from roses,
And the stalwart man forgets his very soul.
And the brave man is perplexed by his fears.

We shall ride her, terrifying, as she twists her rein,
We will mount it skittish, pulling its reins,
And hurl her forth, raging, with no repelling her.
And hurl it against the mindless, none to stop it.

And her dust need only rise
It is just a cloud of dust arising,
For every horizon to turn dust-dark and blackened.
Then no horizon but the darkest gloom.
