بنيO sons of سُلَيمٍSulaym أَعُدُّواprepare الخيلَthe horses وَاحْتَرِسُواand be on guard
بني سُلَيمٍ أَعُدُّوا الخيلَ وَاحْتَرِسُوا
إنif كانَis يَنفعُكُمbenefits you كَرٌّa charge وإقدامُand bold advance
إن كانَ يَنفعُكُم كَرٌّ وإقدامُ
O sons of Sulaym, ready the horses and be on guard,
O people of Suleim, prepare the horses and be on guard
If a charge and bold advance can avail you.
If retreating and advancing can benefit you,
زيدُZayd بنُson of حارثةٍHarithah زيدُZayd بنُson of حارثةٍHarithah
زيدُ بنُ حارثةٍ زيدُ بنُ حارثةٍ
خَطبٌa calamity جليلٌgrave وجُرحٌand a wound ليسdoes not يَلتامُheal
خَطبٌ جليلٌ وجُرحٌ ليس يَلتامُ
Zayd ibn Harithah, Zayd ibn Harithah—
Zayd son of Harithah, Zayd son of Harithah,
A grave calamity and a wound that will not heal.
A great affair, with a wound that will not heal,
هلis there ...? عِندكمwith you أنْif تغشَّتْكُمswept over you سَرِيَّتُهُhis detachment
هل عِندكم أنْ تغشَّتْكُم سَرِيَّتُهُ
للسَّيفِagainst the sword سَيْفٌa sword ولِلضِرغَامِand against the lion ضِرغامُa lion
للسَّيفِ سَيْفٌ ولِلضِرغَامِ ضِرغامُ
Have you, should his detachment sweep over you,
Do you have it in you that his elite force will raid you,
A sword against the sword, a lion against the lion?
The sword has a sword, and the warrior, a warrior,
مَشَىhe marched إليكمtoward you فهلso did ...? قَرَّتْstand firm منازلُكُمyour dwellings
مَشَى إليكم فهل قَرَّتْ منازلُكُم
وَاسْتَمسكَتْand held fast مِنكُمُof yours الأعناقُthe necks والهامُand the heads
وَاسْتَمسكَتْ مِنكُمُ الأعناقُ والهامُ
He marched toward you: did your dwellings stand firm,
He marched against you, did your settlements find peace,
And did your necks and heads hold fast?
As your necks and zeal shrank back from him?
لولاbut for التيshe who انطلَقَتْset out تَهْدِيهِguiding him ماnot عُرِفَتْwere known
لولا التي انطلَقَتْ تَهْدِيهِ ما عُرِفَتْ
مِنكمof you ومنهنَّand of them آياتٌsigns وأعلامُand landmarks
مِنكم ومنهنَّ آياتٌ وأعلامُ
Had it not been for her who set out to guide him, no one would have known
Were it not for her who set out to guide him, he would not have been known
Any signs or landmarks of you or of those dwellings.
Among you - signs and standards there were from her,
فماso ... not الجَمومُal-Jamum وماand what ضمّتْcontained مَنازِلُهُits dwellings
فما الجَمومُ وما ضمّتْ مَنازِلُهُ
إلاexcept ظنونٌconjectures خَفِيَّاتٌobscure وأَوهامُand illusions
إلا ظنونٌ خَفِيَّاتٌ وأَوهامُ
So al-Jamum and all that its dwellings held
So what are the sands and the settlements they embraced
Are nothing but obscure conjectures and illusions.
If not unfounded notions, mysteries and fantasies?
أينwhere الأناسيُّthe people جَلَّexalted is اللَّهُGod هلwere ...? مُسِخُواthey were transformed
أين الأناسيُّ جَلَّ اللَّهُ هل مُسِخُوا
لمّاwhen رَأوْكَthey saw you فَهُمْso they are ياO زيدُZayd أنعامُcattle
لمّا رَأوْكَ فَهُمْ يا زيدُ أنعامُ
Where are the people? Exalted is God! Were they transformed
O people of Anas, may God exalt him! Were they turned into animals
When they saw you? For they are cattle, O Zayd.
When they saw you, so they, O Zayd, are cattle?
ماnot ثَمَّthere إلاexcept الأُلَىthose whom أَدركتَهمyou overtook them قَنصاًas prey
ما ثَمَّ إلا الأُلَى أَدركتَهم قَنصاً
لمdid not يُغِنهِavail him إذwhen هَوَىhe fell خَوْفٌfear وإحجامُand shrinking back
لم يُغِنهِ إذ هَوَى خَوْفٌ وإحجامُ
There are none there but those you overtook as prey;
None remained but the wounded you reached as prey
Fear and shrinking back did not save him when he fell.
Whom, when he fell, did not save fear and holding back.
عُدْreturn بالأُسارَىwith the captives وبالغنمِand with the sheep التيwhich قَسَمَتْapportioned
عُدْ بالأُسارَى وبالغنمِ التي قَسَمَتْ
لَكَto you القواضِبُthe keen-edged swords إنّindeed الغُنْمَthe spoils أقسامُshares
لَكَ القواضِبُ إنّ الغُنْمَ أقسامُ
Return with the captives and the sheep apportioned
Return with the captives and the spoils which
To you by the keen-edged swords; indeed, spoils come in shares.
The floodwaters allotted to you – truly the spoils are allotments!
ياO زيدُZayd ماnot حقّthe due مَنher who دَلَّتكَguided you إذwhen صَدَقتْshe spoke truthfully
يا زيدُ ما حقّ مَن دَلَّتكَ إذ صَدَقتْ
أسْرٌcaptivity تَضِيقُshe is distressed بهby it ذَرعاًin endurance وإرغامُand abasement
أسْرٌ تَضِيقُ به ذَرعاً وإرغامُ
O Zayd, she who truthfully guided you does not deserve
O Zayd, what right has she who guided you, when she was sincere,
Captivity she cannot bear, nor abasement.
To captivity that tries her sorely and oppresses her?
مَنَّshowed clemency النبيُّthe Prophet عليهاto her ثمthen أكرمَهاhe honored her
مَنَّ النبيُّ عليها ثم أكرمَها
فيin مشهدٍa scene كُلِّهِall of it مَنٌّclemency وإكرامُand honor
في مشهدٍ كُلِّهِ مَنٌّ وإكرامُ
The Prophet showed her clemency, then honored her,
The Prophet blessed her then honored her
In a scene that was all clemency and honor.
At a gathering filled with favor and honor.
نَالتْshe received بِنِعْمَتِهِthrough his favor مِنfrom بَعلِهاher husband هِبَةٌa gift
نَالتْ بِنِعْمَتِهِ مِن بَعلِها هِبَةٌ
زَالَتْvanished لهاfor her كُرَبٌtroubles شتَّىvarious وآلامُand pains
زَالَتْ لها كُرَبٌ شتَّى وآلامُ
Through his favor she received a gift from her husband;
By his grace she gained from her husband a gift –
Her manifold troubles and pains were dispelled.
For her diverse troubles and pains were dispelled.
بَنيO sons of سُلَيمٍSulaym أَفيis there in ...? دِينِthe creed of الفُسوقِimpiety لكمfor you
بَني سُلَيمٍ أَفي دِينِ الفُسوقِ لكم
إلاexcept ذُنوبٌsins تَغَشَّاكُمْengulf you وآثامُand transgressions
إلا ذُنوبٌ تَغَشَّاكُمْ وآثامُ
O sons of Sulaym, in the creed of impiety, have you
O people of Suleim, is the religion of wickedness yours,
Anything but sins that engulf you and transgressions?
That sins should envelop and take you in?
ماhow أخيبَdisappointed النفسَthe soul فيin الدُّنياthis world وأخسرَهاand how great its loss
ما أخيبَ النفسَ في الدُّنيا وأخسرَها
إنif أخطأmissed النفسَthe soul إيمانٌfaith وإسلامُand Islam
إن أخطأ النفسَ إيمانٌ وإسلامُ
How disappointed the soul is in this world, and how great its loss,
Nothing makes the soul fail in this world, nothing loses it,
If faith and Islam pass the soul by!
If the soul misses faith and Islam.
ياalas للبَلاءِfor the calamity أَيُعْصَىis ... disobeyed? اللَّهُGod ليسthere is not لهfor Him
يا للبَلاءِ أَيُعْصَى اللَّهُ ليس له
كُفؤٌan equal وتُعْبَدُand are worshipped أوثانٌidols وأصنامُand graven images
كُفؤٌ وتُعْبَدُ أوثانٌ وأصنامُ
Alas, what calamity! Is God disobeyed, though He has no
Oh, the tribulation! Is God disobeyed? He has
Equal, while idols and graven images are worshipped?
No match, yet idols and statues are worshiped!
