وَأَينَand where هِيَthey الأُمَمُthe nations الغُيَّبُthe vanished
O brother of Time, what is Time when its lineage is traced?
O brother of time, what is time when attributed?
And where are they, the vanished nations?
And where are those vanished nations?
شَرِبتَyou drank العُصورَthe ages فَأَفنَيتَهاand so you annihilated them
وَماand not زِلتَyou have ceased مِنfrom دَمِهاtheir blood تَشرَبُyou drink
You drank the ages and made them perish,
You drank the ages and destroyed them,
And still you drink their blood.
Yet you still drink their blood.
تُميتُyou cause death وَتُحييand give life عَلىaccording to شِرعَةٍa law
يَدورُrevolves بِهاby it الزَمَنُTime القُلَّبُthe fickle
You deal death and give life according to a law
You kill and revive according to a system
By which fickle Time revolves.
By which time revolves, fickle and wavering.
تَثورُyou surge وَتَسكُنُand grow still تَقضيyou decide الأُمورَaffairs
فَتَطفوso rise to the surface الحَوادِثُevents أَوor تَرسُبُsink
You surge and grow still, deciding affairs,
You rage and calm, fulfill affairs,
So events rise to the surface or sink.
So events rise or settle down.
أَخاO brother of الدَهرِTime أَينَwhere is حَديثُthe tale of القُرونِthe centuries
وَأَينَand where is المِدادُthe ink لِمَنfor whoever يَكتُبُwrites
O brother of Time, where is the tale of the centuries,
O brother of time, where are the tales of eras?
And where is the ink for whoever writes?
And where is the ink for one who would write?
شَهِدتَyou witnessed المَمالِكَthe kingdoms تُزجيsend forth الجُنودَthe armies

وَعايَنتَهاand you beheld them رِمَماًdecayed remains تُندَبُbeing mourned
You witnessed kingdoms sending forth armies,
You witnessed kingdoms deploy armies
And beheld them as decayed remains, mourned.
And saw them as mended ruins.

And whatever Time has concealed of their secrets,
Whatever time has veiled of their mysteries
Its hidden part is not concealed from you.
Remains undisclosed to you.

To you I turned, gathering my hopes,
To you I turned, cherishing wishes,
And send them forth, yearning, ever striving,
Sending them urged on tirelessly.

Conquering, they reach the farthest bounds,
Conquerors reach the farthest extent
And mightier Fate seizes them.
While fate, the inevitable, seizes them.

They are guided along their varied paths
It disposes them in their demise
By a love that neither strays nor lies,
With passion not deviant or lying.

Following a creed of midmorning light,
On a doctrine of the dawn’s radiance
Admired splendor exchanges smiles with it.
It enchants them with pleasing grace.

Radiant letters dwell beside it,
Accompanying it is a splendid literature
As one star dwells beside another.
As planets accompany planets.
فَياso, O نيلُNile أَنتَyou are الهَوىlove وَالحَياةُand life
وَأَنتَand you are الأَميرُthe prince وَأَنتَand you are الأَبُthe father
So, O Nile, you are love and life,
So O Nile! You are passion and life.
And you are the prince, and you are the father.
You are the prince and father.
وَياand, O نيلُNile أَنتَyou are الصَديقُthe friend الوَفِيُّthe loyal
وَأَنتَand you are الأَخُthe brother الأَصدَقُthe truest الأَطيَبُthe kindest
And, O Nile, you are the loyal friend,
And O Nile! You are the faithful friend
And you are the truest, kindest brother.
And the most sincere, sweetest brother.
وَأَنتَand you are القَريضُpoetry الَّذيthat أَقتَفيI follow

فَيَزهىso takes pride بِهِin it الشرقُthe East وَالمَغرِبُand the West
And you are the poetry that I follow,
You are the poem I discover,
So East and West take pride in it.
Making East and West shine.
وَلَولاكَand were it not for you تَعذِبُyou are sweet لِلشارِبينَto those who drink
لَماwould not ساغَbe palatable مَورِدُهُits wellspring الأَعذَبُthe sweetest
And were you not sweet to those who drink,
Without you, drinking would torment the drinkers.
Its sweetest wellspring would not be palatable.
Your sweet stream could not be savored.
فَإِنso if أورِثِI bequeath الخِصبَfertility هذيthese العقولَminds
فممّاthen from what تعلِّمنيyou teach me تخصبُthey grow fertile
So if I bequeath fertility to these minds,
If you make these minds fertile,
They grow fertile from what you teach me.
It will be from what you teach.
وإنand if أناI أطربتُhave enraptured هَذيthese النُفوسَsouls

فَصَوتُكَthen your voice لاnot صَوتِيَmy voice المُطرِبُthe enrapturing one
And if I have stirred these souls to rapture,
If I have delighted these souls,
It is your voice, not mine, that enraptures.
It is your sound, not mine, that enchants.
تَسيلُyou flow فَتَندَفِقُso pour forth الرائِعاتُthe marvels

وَتَجريand you run فَتَستَبِقُso race one another الجُوَّبُthe far-roaming ones
You flow, and marvels pour forth,
You flow, and masterpieces pour forth.
And you run, and the far-roaming ones race one another:
You run, and poems race.
قَوافٍrhymes يَقودُleads بِهاwith them الحادِثاتِevents
فَتىًa youth لاnot يُقادُis led وَلاand not يُجنَبُis led alongside
Rhymes through which events are guided
Leadership takes them to the ends of places.
By a youth who is neither led nor taken in tow.
A heroic youth not led or diverted.
عَصَيتُكَI have disobeyed you إِنif كانَthere is ليfor me مَأرِبٌa desire
سِواكَother than you فَيُؤثَرُso is preferred أَوor يُطلَبُis sought
I have disobeyed you if I have any desire
If I have a goal apart from you,
Other than you, to be preferred or sought.
I would prefer or seek it.
قَسَمتَyou apportioned الحُظوظَfortunes فَمَنso who يَشتَكيcomplains
وَسُستَand you governed الحَياةَlife فَمَنso who يَعتَبُfinds fault
You have apportioned fortunes, so who complains?
You divided fortunes—who then complains?
And you have governed life, so who finds fault?
You ordained life—who then blames?
لَئِنif indeed فاتَنيeluded me الذَهَبُgold المُنتَقىthe choice
فَماyet not فاتَنيeluded me الأَدَبُliterature المُذهَبُthe gilded
Even if choice gold has eluded me,
If untried gold has eluded me,
Gilded letters have not eluded me.
Refined literature has not.
وَهَبتُI bestowed لَكَon you المُلكَsovereignty مُلكَthe sovereignty of القَريضِpoetry
وَذَلِكَand that أَفضَلُthe best ماwhat يوهَبُis bestowed
I have bestowed sovereignty on you—the sovereignty of poetry,
I gifted you kingdom, rule of verse,
And that is the best that can be bestowed.
The finest gift given.
فَهَلso, has وَهَبَتgiven ماwhat لَهاit possesses أُمَّةٌa nation
يَظَلُّkeeps الغُرورُvanity بِهاwith it يَلعَبُplaying
So has a nation given what it possesses,
Did any nation give what it possesses
While vanity keeps toying with it?
While illusion toys with it?
تَضِنُّit begrudges عَلَيكَto you بِنَزرِa scant amount of العَطاءِgiving
وَيَسلُبُهاand robs it الغَيُّfolly ماwhatever يَسلُبُit steals
It begrudges you a scant offering,
It is miserly with you with bits of bounty.
And folly robs it of whatever it steals.
Loss robs it of what loss takes away.
تُسيءُit does wrong إِلَيكَto you فَلاyet not تَستَطيرُyou flare up
وَتَجنيand it commits wrong عَلَيكَagainst you فَلاyet not تَغضَبُyou grow angry
It wrongs you, yet you do not flare up,
It harms you but you do not take offense.
And injures you, yet you do not grow angry.
It sins against you but you do not rage.
وَتَقتُلُand it kills أَبناءَكَyour sons النابِغينَthe brilliant
فَتَذهَبُso you go فيin الحِلمِforbearance ماas far as تَذهَبُyou go
And it kills your brilliant sons,
It kills your gifted children.
Yet you go to such lengths in forbearance.
Wisdom diminishes what disappears.
أَلَمis it not يَئنِbe time أَنthat تَزَعَyou restrain الجاهِلينَthe ignorant
فَنَحياso we may live وَنَأمَنَand we may be safe from ماwhat نَرهَبُwe fear
Is it not time for you to restrain the ignorant,
Does it not pain you that the ignorant rouse you,
So we may live and be safe from what we fear?
While we live in dread of what we fear?
لَئِنif indeed وَجَبَis obligatory الحِلمُforbearance عَمَّنtoward whoever أَساءَdid wrong
فَإِنَّthen indeed دِفاعَwarding off الأَذىharm أَوجَبُis more obligatory
If forbearance toward wrongdoers is indeed a duty,
If forbearance is due those who did evil,
Then warding off harm is a greater duty.
Then defending against harm is even more due.
فَلاso do not تَجرِflow إِلّاexcept دَماًblood أَوor ذُعافاًdeadly poison
وَلاand do not تَحفَلheed القَومَthe people أَنthat يَعطَبواthey perish
So flow with nothing but blood or deadly poison,
So drag forth only blood or corpses,
And do not care if the people perish.
And pay the people no heed should they perish.
أَماناًgrant safety فَماfor no بَينَناamong us ثائِرٌa rebel
وَعَفواًand pardon فَماfor no بَينَناamong us مُذنِبُan offender
Grant safety, for there is no rebel among us,
We now have security, so no rebel remains,
And pardon, for there is no offender among us.
And pardon, so no sinner remains.
عَسىperhaps عقِبٌoffspring مِنهُموfrom them صالِحٌrighteous

يُعَظِّمُhonors أَقدارَthe worth of مَنthose whom تُنجِبُyou bring forth
Perhaps righteous offspring from them
May hope remain for goodness from them,
Will honor the worth of those you bring forth.
Revering the worth of those you beget.
