Letters follow one another, and battalions advance;
The books are scattered, and the armies advance,
and war's fury rises and rages between them.
And calamity arises between them, raging and storming.

God charged His Messenger with the kings,
God has entrusted the messengers with the kings,
and behold, their thrones sway and tremble beneath them.
So the thrones through them sway and tremble.

Are these hearts persisting in their beating,
Are they hearts that melt in their throbbings,
or wings that keep on fluttering?
Or are those wings that hover and flutter?

The Prophet's envoys roam through every land;
The messengers of the Prophet roam every land,
soaring, far-hurling aspirations fling them onward.
Hurling at them determined souls that hurl and pelt.

They bore unyielding hearts, safeguarded through them
They carried the deaf hearts that He protects through them-
by their steadfast faith and firmly grounded judgment.
A religion for them, steadfast, and sound judgment.

They strike boulders and iron with a force
It hurls boulders and iron with such force,
that presses on, cleaving and shattering whatever it wills.
Marching on, splitting what it wills and crushing.

The defiant despot fears its chastisement,
The arrogant tyrant fears its punishment,
and the arrogant, overbearing man dreads it.
And the haughty braggart dreads it.

Travel secretly under the protection of God- verily it is
a task for you, with no stopping short of it.
For you a need without which you will lag behind.

Awaken Heraclius, for his sleep has grown prolonged,
Awaken Heraclius- his sleep has grown long,
and his blindness persists, refusing to clear.
And his blindness refuses to be lifted and dissipate.

A singular religion with no partner known.

He took the letter and went on asking; whenever
Heraclius presented to his people that indeed
certainty grew clear to him, he pressed and insisted.
A fair heart had inclined to Islam within him.

Speak, Abu Sufyan; do not obey desire,
He sent the scripture, and he said: "I am a Muslim,
and leave reproach to those who wrong and swerve from justice.
But they are my intractable people I fear."

Heraclius showed his people the leaning
And he chose from what he loves a gift
of a fair-minded heart within him toward Islam.
That he casts from his tricks to ingratiate.

The Prophet said: "A missive from a deceitful one
to see clearly—and where is our escape?'
Feigning satisfaction, and a hypocrite pretending."

He sent the letter, saying, 'I am a Muslim,
"A contemptible gift and contemptible is its speech-
but it is my own people whom I fear.'
Falsehood is of its names, and vanity."

offering it in his cunning to curry favor.
What do you think of one you request and implore?"

ماذا تظنُّ بِمَنْ تُغاثُ وتُسْعَفُ
Khosrow, woe upon woe to you! What do you seek?
You asked Bahram for the head of Muhammad-
What do you suppose? By whom will you be rescued and aided?
If he does not repent, you are indeed prodigal and wasteful!
مَزقَّتَyou tore apart منfrom كُتبِletters النبيِّthe Prophet تميمةًa talisman

From the Prophet's letters you tore apart a talisman,
You will see certainty by the hand of your son- so beware!
within which are springs of mercy that never run dry,
For you is an appointed time, soon to come.

بِيَدَيهِ حينَ يُصيبُها المتلقِّفُ
and a treasure—one finds all treasures
The Prophet spoke true, and Chosroes tasted his death
in one's hands when one grasps and gains it.
From Sheroe- he had none to sympathize.

إن لم يَتُبْ بل أنتَ غاوٍ مُسرِفُ
Did you demand Muhammad's head from Badhan
And Bahram saw guidance after misguidance,
if he did not repent? Rather, you are astray and exceed all bounds.
So he walked the shining path, without deviating.

You will see the truth at your son's hand—take heed!
He abandoned desire, so he woke and became Muslim,
You have an appointed hour, soon drawing near.
And called others with him-they did not lag behind.

The Prophet spoke truly, and Khosrow tasted his doom
The resolve of the people was not in vain-their God
from Shirawayh, with none to show him pity.
United hearts upon guidance, so they reconciled.

Badhan found guidance after error,
And the Negus came the scripture, and he was not
and followed the white path, without straying.
Of those who bar from right and cast aside.

He cast off desire, came to his senses, and became a Muslim,
An honor presented itself to him, and might sustained him-
and called those with him, and they did not hold back.
The pious one is the mightiest and most noble.

جمعَ القلوبَ على الهدى فتألَّفوا
May the people's fortune never fail! Indeed, their God
And the Muqawqis refused to abandon his religion-
gathered their hearts around guidance, and they united.
The ignorant fears what the foolish libertine fears.

The letter reached al-Najashi, who was not
He sent gifts, avoiding with his benevolence
one who turns away from what is right and shuns it.
What the spiteful plotter avoids.

Honor was granted him, and glory adorned him;
The wicked one hoarded his kingdom, and tomorrow he will see
indeed, the God-fearing man is the most exalted, the noblest.
Another's hand in his kingdom, freely disposing.

Al-Muqawqis refused to leave his religion,
This the Prophet foretold, and thus did
fearing what the foolish, pampered man fears.
The One who builds and topples thrones act.

ما يتّقِي ذُو البِغْضَةِ المتلطِّفُ
He sent gifts, seeking through their beauty to ward off
And al-Mundhir took the straight path
what an ingratiating man full of hatred seeks to avert.
Before the scripture, intuiting and inclining toward it.

The wicked man clung jealously to his kingship; tomorrow he will see
He asked the Prophet, who said: "I will not
another's hand wielding power in his kingdom.
Act against the people when they stray and distort."

This is what the Prophet said, and thus
The command came to him to seize them thereby
did the One who builds thrones and blasts them away.
And establish it with the truth, without deviating.

Al-Mundhir took the path, rightly guided,
The Muslims have their affairs, and upon
even before the letter, trotting and galloping along it.
He who strays, the fair tax that does not wrong.
سألَasked النبيَّthe Prophet فقالَand said ماwhat أناI فاعلٌto do

بالقومِwith the people إذwhen ضَلُّواlost السّبيلَthe path وَزَيَّفُواand dealt in falsehood
بالقومِ إذ ضَلُّوا السّبيلَ وَزَيَّفُوا
He asked the Prophet, 'What am I to do
And Jayfar, his ignorance and obstinacy prevailed,
with people who have lost the path and dealt in falsehood?'
So he refused `Amr and turned away disdainfully.

So he conveyed the ruling to him, to bind them by it
And he saw him spewing threats, so it deterred him,
and enforce it justly, without swerving:
And the morrow came, so he submitted without hesitation.

And his brother followed, led on-
those astray a poll tax, levied justly and without oppression.
Well-mannered, clement, and learned.

Jayfar's ignorance and obstinacy swept him away,
And her messenger came to Yamama with the scripture,
so he refused Amr and turned away in disdain.
For so the ambitious tyrant raves.

Then he saw him roaring out threats, and it frightened him;
The arrogance of her poet and the ignorance of her orator
the next day came, and he yielded without hesitation.
And the deception of her chieftain, lethal and corrupting.

He fell into line, followed by his brother, who was
He sought the impossible from the Prophet, and he did not stop-
truly refined, gracious in character, and cultivated.
The ignorant always craves the impossible and is impassioned by it.

The envoy to al-Yamamah arrived with the letter;
He raves with some of the matter, cutting it off for himself,
thus does the ambitious, arrogant man rave:
While the matter is not as the cutting sword splits.

the tyranny of its poet, the ignorance of its orator,
And wretched al-Harith fell in his stupidity-
and its lord's destructive, ruinous vainglory.
Addled, which infects minds, so they weaken.

He asked the Prophet for the impossible; always
He cast aside the scripture and said: "My kingdom is not for me
the ignorant man is infatuated and enamored with the impossible.
A match, so it is seized from my hand and snatched."

He raves about a share of rule to be allotted him,
"Look to the bravery of the horses and soldiers-
yet rule is what the keen-edged sword has settled.
They meet the enemy, attacking and charging."

As for foolish al-Harith, his reason was swept away
"And remind your friend of the discourse- perhaps
by a madness that strikes minds and weakens them.
The honorable shrink, and the aimed at flee."

Foolish, rage billowing within its lines,

And malice kindling in its letters.

He said: "Be deterred- you are not its match,

And refrain- you are the agitator frightening."

its letters blazing with hatred.
Not ashamed of it, nor refined.

He sent greetings with Ibn Wahb and pretended

The claim of one who loosens the mask and covers.
