Has not today's long estrangement been enough for me

From those I love, when it is no time for meeting?

O departing ones, whose dwelling is in my heart,

How often I say: you have lodged in my innermost being!

How often I reproach my ill fortune concerning you,

Yet my fate gives no answer to my call.

    فمتى يكون بقربكم إبرائي

    You traveled to recover from what had befallen you;

When shall your nearness bring about my cure?

And when will time grant me a meeting with you,

And restrain separation's hand from hurting me?

You went east; I, with exile's choking anguish,

Am in the West, choking and laden with sorrows.

O you who feel compassion for a gravely ill, wounded sufferer,

I am that wounded man, inseparable from maladies.

Prescribe for me what you would prescribe for one

At death's door, and be discerning about remedies.

Do not let the attire you see on me deceive you:

Beneath the fine new cloth are wasted limbs.

By Him who gives life and brings death, I am not among the

Dead, nor numbered with the living.

Though those I love have forgotten me, I have not

Forgotten them amid misery and adversity.

Despite my own affliction, I feel compassion for a lover

Like myself, even if he is among my enemies.

Distance does not quench the fire of my longing; rather,

The sun's remoteness is the cause of heat.

After their departure, my innermost soul admits no

Love; nor is it lawful to annul my fidelity.

The state of all mankind changes, while my condition

Is what you see, in my mornings and evenings.

My tears are pledged to flow,

And my eyes are excused from sleep.

I see the man who, like me, wept over separation,

Beside the one whose absence had afflicted him with tears.

How strange that my fate has never ceased to see me,

Though my wasting sickness has hidden me from the watchers!

How strange that bathing in my tears leaves me stricken,

While hot water heals other people!

How strange that my life has lasted so long through separation,

Though the earth is too narrow for the reach of my hope!

How strange that dawn comes swiftly to other people's nights,

While the dawn of my night is forever delayed!

In it, my thoughts build hope upon

The foundation of impossibility—what a wretched foundation to build on!

The longing lodged within my ribs makes me imagine

That I am asleep, and they lie beside me,

Until, when morning comes, they vanish; indeed,

For me they were nothing but ropes of dust.

O my loved ones, no illness of mine brings you

Contagion; so visit me, and feel safe from my disease.

My sickness comes from the languid gaze; what wastes me is the

Slender waist; all except you are my enemies.

I ask of you nothing but to speak the name of the one

I love; that name suffices me in place of other names.

If omens were of use, I would today be among

The most fortunate of mankind, the happiest of the happy,

For everyone going out in the morning utters their name—

Or is that the delusion of beguiling love?

Or is one effect this passion produces that it

Distracts one with things that do not exist?

O that I had other people's hearts, or their good fortune!

If a thrust is beyond reach, then hold fast to consolation.

Or would that my loved ones knew my plight,

And hurried in compassion to rescue me!

    يكفيه ما يلقي من الإقصاء

    Far be it from them to forsake one infatuated with them;

Enough for him is what he suffers from being kept away.

Even amid separation, he sees separation as easy, just as

Nearness with coldness is itself estrangement.

Alas for a time that has passed away, and with it ended

My joy in their company and my happiness!

For what anguish and calamity afterward

Have the days left me alive, in the worst of survivals?

How can I endure parting, when

My eyes see none like them among the wild cattle?

    وشماتة المشكين شرّ بلاء

    If I complain, I find no one to share my complaint;

The gloating of those I complain to is the worst affliction.

And if I keep silent, solace is imagined in me by the

Onlooker; but that falls short of a seer's work.

Would that I knew what turned my loved ones

Away from me—what warnings and incitements!

They begrudged me a breath from their mouths,

For the east wind to carry toward me as my cure.

If the iron of their heart stays over

The fire of love within me, it does not soften at my plea.

Perhaps they have found cause to blame me,

And so it made even goodness appear to them as evil.

    والعفو مأمول من الكرماء

    Suppose I have done wrong: here I am, asking forgiveness;

And pardon is hoped for from the generous.

    سيّان فيه من دنا والنائي

    My cure is easy for them: it is their approval;

In this, the one nearby and the distant one are alike.

If no words proclaim it openly, then let

An unspoken remembrance stand in their place; that suffices me.

I am content with your good intentions,

Even if my own satisfaction has eluded me.
