You have slept, heedless of his longings,

and prolonged the tightening of his bonds.

and [apparently forgot] the pledge of a love-enslaved one,

who remains steadfast in his covenant.

He left dignity to those who wear it,

and wandered distraught with his longings.

He forsook his companions, though once

a loving brother to his companions.

The reproacher is disposed to prolong

    his reproaches and his strife.

O you who make me drink the cup of parting,

and death is less bitter than tasting it.

Do not fill it to the brim, for I

    perish even without its fullness.

Be gentle with a love-enslaved heart

that has flowed out through its eye-corners.

Alas for a heart: relentless is the heat

    of parting in burning it.

And a slender youth whom the moon resembles,

at its fullness, in his radiance.

There rose, to beguile whoever sees

him, the sun from his collars.

    Sickness bars approach to him,

    and death bars his embrace.

Chaste of glance, keeping clear of hearts,

he lingers with his gaze lowered.

And when he gazes, it is as though they

were tied to the fastening of his girdle.

When he smiled at my weeping,

he persisted in flashing like lightning.

Then he grew agitated when the watcher returned,

    and persisted in drowning him.

The lightning of the protected abode appeared to me,

and [I lay sleepless] from its flickering.

And the north wind passed by night, spreading it,

and the anguish of his yearning lover flared.

So I began seeking a cure in it,

though my doom lay in breathing it in.

So through it the malady of love grew,

and I despaired of recovery from it.

How strange your coolness, O breeze,

when you are among his lovers!

And among the wonders is that I

have lived after parting from him.
