عسفتyou dealt harshly بِقَلبيwith my heart فيin الهَوىlove إِذwhen مَلَكتَنيyou possessed me
وَهَلand can ...? يَستَرقenslave الحرa free man شَيءٌanything سِوىother than الحُبِlove
You dealt harshly with my heart in love when you possessed me.
You abused my heart when you possessed me,
And can anything but love enslave a free man?
Is there anything a free man steals but love?
مَنَحتُكَI gave you وَديmy affection مُخلِصاًsincerely فيهِin it صادِقاًtruthfully
وَصُدقand the sincerity وِدادaffection المَرءِa man's عَنof نُبلِهِhis nobility يَنبيspeaks
I gave you my affection with sincerity and truth.
I gave you my affection sincere and true,
And the sincerity of a man's affection speaks of his nobility.
A man's truth in affection shows his nobleness.
فَأَصبَحَتthen you began تَجفونيto shun me وَلاand no ليَfor me حيلَةrecourse
وَماليand I have no سِوىexcept فَرطexcess المَحبةlove مِنany ذَنبfault
Then you began to shun me, and I had no recourse.
Yet now you spurn me and I've no recourse,
And I had no fault but an excess of love.
I've no crime but loving you with excess.
وَأَعرضتand you turned away حَتّىuntil طابَbecame sweet ليto me مَورsurge الرَدىdeath
وَماand not المَوتdeath إِلّاexcept دونless than أَعراضِكَyour rejection الصَعبharsh
And you turned away until the surge of death grew sweet to me.
You turned away until death seemed sweet to me,
And death is easier than your harsh rejection.
For death is nothing matched to your disdain.
فَذلتso it yielded لِذاكَto that النَفسthe soul منيof mine وَلَمand did not تَكَدcome close to doing so
وَلَيسَand there is no عَلىupon مَنwhoever ذَلَّwas humbled فيin الحُبlove مِنany عَتَبِblame
So my soul yielded to that, though it scarcely could.
For that soul I've been humbled but scarcely blamed,
And there is no blame on anyone humbled in love.
No blame lies on one who in love is debased.
وَكُنتُand I was أَبياًunyielding قَبلَbefore أَنthat أَحملI bear الهَوىlove
إِذاif مَلَنيgrew weary of me قَلبيmy heart تَبرَّأتI disowned مِنfrom قَلبيmy heart
And I was unyielding before I bore love.
I was proud before the passion filled my heart,
If my heart grew weary of me, I would disown my heart.
When my heart is sickened, I disown its pain.
