فَلَستُfor I am not أَلقاهُI meet him يَوماًever غَيرother than مُنحَرِفِturned away
Who will grant me justice against a cruel one bent on my ruin?
I am one of the fair from the greatly unjust
For I never meet him without his turning away.
So I will never meet him except undeviating
يَصدُّhe turns away عَنيfrom me بِلاwithout ذَنبan offense جنتهُcommitted it يَديmy hand
وَكُلَماand whenever صَدَّhe turned away عَنيfrom me زادَgrew بيwithin me شَغَفيmy passion
He turns away from me, though my hand has committed no wrong,
He bars his paradise from me without sin
And whenever he turns from me, my passion grows within me.
And the more he bars me, the more my passion grows

And love, though its springs are sweet,
And love, though its springs are sweet
Is nothing but sickness, and nothing but sorrow and regret.
Is naught but sickness, sorrow and gloom

ماhow كانَwas أَغناكyou were free of need ياO قَلبيmy heart عَنof التَلَفruin
I say to my heart, while longings burn it:
I say to my heart and the passions burning it
How little need you had, O my heart, of ruin!
Of what use has it been, O my heart, save wasting away
بِذَلتI offered روحيmy soul لِمَنto whoever يُرضيكpleases you ياO سَكنيmy solace
وَلَيسَand is not هَذاthis مِنof التَبذيرsquandering وَالسَرفand extravagance
I have offered my soul to whoever pleases you, O my solace,
I sacrificed my soul to one who gladdens you, my home
And this is neither squandering nor extravagance.
And this is no prodigality or excess
أَصفَيتُكَI sincerely gave you الودaffection مِنfrom دونapart from الأَنامhumankind وَمِنand whoever

I have given you pure love to the exclusion of all others; and whoever
I clarified my love for you, apart from mankind and from
Offers sincere affection to the one he loves is plain to see.
Whoever clarifies his love but the impassioned one

And the sincere lover and the insincere are never confused
Sincere love and its essence are not confused
By the discerning; pearls are not like shells.
By one of sense, for pearls are unlike shells

O you who zealously torment me by shunning me,
O you who tortures me with rejection, striving
Be gentle, for my soul has reached the brink of ruin.
Gently, for my soul is close to extinction

O full moon, whose form God has exalted
O perfect full moon, may God preserve its image
Above eclipse, undoing, and dark blemishes!
From eclipse, from loss, from blemish

The full moon does not keep eyes from seeing it,
The moon's light cannot be barred from sight
Yet you are veiled from me out of arrogance.
While you are veiled from me by aloofness

Aim your arrows, O you who have torn my liver
Make your arrows true, O you who lacerated my liver
With your glances—this is the target's end.
With glances—for this is the final target
