كُلُ يَوم وَدَمعُهُ في اِنسِكابِ
Who will aid a lovesick man whose entrails are aflame,
With burning grief and daily flowing tears
Every day, his tears pouring forth?
My life divided between sorrow and crying out

وَبُكاء وَلَوعَة وَاِنتِحاب
His whole life is divided among sorrow,
And a beloved who pained me after turning away
And weeping, burning anguish, and sobbing.

And a beloved came to me after estrangement,
Graced with beauty and charm as my heart
And grievous rejection and avoidance.

The one whose words intoxicate and charm
Singled out my heart for longing and unrest.

I said my beloved how can you be so cold
Of his night journey, and tugged with him at the trailing skirts of reproach.
And avoid me when I love you so dearly

My solace, my patience, and my reason have left me,
Does it suit a lover to be so rejected
And my calm, my comfort, and my youth.

Is it fitting to turn away from a lover who
My nights pass in anxiety and my days
Has no wish but to draw near?

A night passes in worry and
Among my family and friends I became
Sleeplessness, and his day passes in torment.
Secluded, lonesome, and isolated

Because of you, among my family and friends, I find myself
Your rejection has been long my lord
In solitude, loneliness, and estrangement.

Long has your rejection of me lasted, my master,
He was silent out of shyness and gave
And the nights pass as clouds pass.

He shyly averted his gaze from me and gave no
Blushing appeared on his cheek, he drew

And embers appeared upon his cheek, moist with dew;
I made excuses - the cruel days wronged me
Then he hid beneath a veil of his rosy bloom.

Who will defend me against the tyranny of stubborn Time,
I concealed my beloved's eyes from mine
And nights wrathful for no offense?
And kept him in my wounded heart

They veiled the one I love from my eyes,
So when I wished to see him
And lodged him in my stricken heart.
I spoke to him from behind a veil

So it was as though, when I wished to meet
I said some words though they may have been
Him, I whispered to him from behind a veil.

The turtledove is kinder to lovers
What the love-crazed man breathes out was a decisive judgment:

Surely the draught of death is kinder to
The tormented lover than parting from loved ones.
