Whenever the wind's breeze travels by night from your direction,
When the breeze blows from your abode
It sends sparks of fire flying from my burning liver.
It ignites the embers in my burning heart

It came at evening from the gardens of al-Nayrabayn,
The melody comes from the gardens of paradise at dusk
And had borne a fragrant waft from their scented reaches.
Bearing the scent of its corners as a gift

It almost offers me the purest of its wine,
It nearly offers me a sip of its wine
And its water drips, drop by drop, from its hems.
As its drops of water trickle down

وَأَبعثand I send رُسلmessengers الدَمعof tears فيin أَثرهاits wake تتراone after another
I charge it with a lover's greeting from me,
I send it my greetings and yearning
And send messengers of tears in its wake, one after another.
And unleash my tearful messengers in its pursuit
وَبَرقٌand lightning سَرىtraveled by night وَاللَيلwhile the night قَدhad already رَقَّgrown mild بَردُهُits chill

And lightning passed by night, while the night's chill had grown mild,
Lightning flashed as the night grew cold
So it bore my heart by night toward you and banished patience.
So I ventured with my heart towards you, and patience fled
كانّas though مباديthe first gleams الصُبحof dawn ذَيلthe hem غِلالُهُof a gauzy robe (likely intended)

As though dawn's first gleams were the hem of a gauzy robe,
The trails of dawn’s darkness
Dipped in my tears and thus appearing red.
Were immersed in my tears, appearing red
أَكلُّdoes every نَسيمbreeze مَرَّpassed بيby me يَستَفرنيstir me (likely intended)

Does every breeze that passes me stir me,
Every breeze that passes revives me
And every flash that shines before me renew remembrance?
And every gleam appears, renewing the memories

And on the day of parting—may it never have been!—when it struck us down,
On the day of love when it possessed us
And love revealed in us its greatest sign,
And revealed in us its greatest sign
أَقولI say لِنَفسيto my soul حينَwhen عافَتit loathed حَياتهاits life
أَلاbehold فَرديthen approach هَذاthis الحَمامdeath لَكَfor you البُشرىglad tidings
I say to my soul when it loathes its life:
I say to myself when life is kind
Come, then, to this death—glad tidings are yours!
Behold, this pigeon brings good tidings to you
فَقَدfor indeed طالَماso often قَدalready كُنتyou were تَستَعجلينهُseeking to hasten it

For you have so often sought to hasten it,
For long have you been impatient for it
Whenever they drew away from you or showed estrangement.
When they shunned or deserted you
لَعَلَperhaps الرَدىdeath يَشفيكَwill heal you مِنof لاعِجِthe searing pain الأَسىof grief
فَإِنfor indeed الرَدىdeath بِالصَبfor the lovesick lover بَعدafter النَوىparting أَحرىis more fitting
Perhaps death will cure you of the searing sting of grief,
May this reply heal the agony of your sorrow
For death better befits the lovesick lover after parting.
For a reply after love is best
وَياand O قَلبheart ماwhat هَذاthis اللَهيبblaze أَكلماwhenever (interrogative)

And O heart, what is this blaze? Whenever
Oh heart, what is this flame that
I sprinkle water on you, do you turn it into embers?
Whenever the water cooks you, turns you to ember

And can love's fire die out, when every time
Can the fire of love be extinguished when
It fades beneath my tears, remembrance's hand rekindles it?
My tears revive it, ignited by the hand of memory?
ياO صاحِبيmy companion بِاللَهِby God غَيبmake absent بِذكرهمthrough remembering them

O my companion, by God, through remembrance of them, hide
My friend, for God’s sake, make me forget them
My own being from me, for it has always intoxicated me.
For remembrance keeps intoxicating me

سِواءٌwhether حَلاbecame sweet عِنديto me بِهاin it العَيشlife أَوor مَرّاbecame bitter
May the age of parting end somehow,
May the days of separation end soon
Whether life in that state becomes sweet to me or bitter.
Be the living thereafter easy or bitter
وَإِنand if مُتI die فَادفنيthen bury me بِعَيشكby your life صاحِبيmy companion

And if I die, then bury me—by your life, my companion—
And if I die, then bury me, my friend
Among strangers, and write a line about my suffering:
Among foreigners, and write on my coffin one line

Lo, may the All-Merciful have mercy on a noble man who died of grief,
Woe to the Merciful for a free man who suffered misery
And never forgot a beloved, nor committed betrayal.
Yet did not complain or commit treachery
