O you whose dwelling lies far

from me, and whose visiting-place is remote.

A lovesick, bewildered lover would give his life for you,

besotted with you, never finding rest.

Forever, in anguish, there pass over him

    his night and his day.

    He always conceals his sorrow,

and his weeping exposes his secret.

And so it is with one drunk on love:

    his denial is his confession.

They have fallen asleep, leaving him, as

the night grew long—his nightly companions.

The armies of his cares have multiplied,

    and his allies have faltered.

    So his moods keep changing,

and his wishes have become unattainable,

and his thoughts have grown confused,

and his veils have been torn away.

If his tears run dry, his remembrance makes

    their waters gush forth.

    Then tears almost drown him,

yet his fire does not die down.

Rain lavishly watered the beloveds' dwelling,

with its downpours and its showers.

    Then its streams surged,

    and its birds sang melodiously.

    May musk always waft there

from its laurel and its oxeye flowers.

How long we lived there in bliss,

    its troubles having cleared away.

And how often we were served there cups

    of love by its moons.

Its late afternoons grew gentle, just as

its hours before dawn delighted us.

    Its gardens are its taverns,

    and its breeze its wine-seller.

    Its cups are its blossoms,

and the dew there is its wine.

You have no need for Ma'bad's melodies

    or al-Gharid's: its nightingale suffices.

And a slender beauty, whose glances slew,

    while his waistcloth remained chaste.

A gazelle, who has come to give life and kill

through his friendliness and his shying away.

    A full moon, yet astonishment

and aversion are his moonless phase.

Strange wonders are revealed to me

by his sorcerer, through his gaze.

Thus he keeps imprinting in the very core

of the heart whatever he chooses.

Never did I look at him without

his keen sword filling me with dread.

Alas for one slain by glances—

no vengeance is sought for him.

How often I kept vigil through the night, until

its tattered robes were torn apart.

I kept it alive, and my heart's nightly companion

was its throbbing and its blaze.

The wounded eyelid was not lined with kohl

by even a brief snatch of sleep.

    At last, when morning smiled

    and its lights shone forth,

the doves, with their cooing, split

my heart, and its sparks flew.

I had indeed been wary of love, but

wariness of it did no good.

    Whoever doubts that passion kills—

    here, then, are its traces.
