فَفُؤاديso my heart فيin قَبضةthe grip of الوَجدpassionate longing عانيa captive
O you who turn away, who have spurned me,
O you who have turned away from me
so my heart is captive in longing’s grip.
While my heart suffers in the grip of passion

وَيَحكيهِand echoes it رقةin tenderness فيin البَيانexpression
My tears have begun to race my speech in complaint,
My tears race my words in lament
and echo it in tenderness of expression.
And portray their tenderness eloquently

سcompletion of ‘the cup’ وَأَعنيand I mean بِهِby it الَّذيthe one who قَدhas عَنانيtormented me
How much reproach I voice, even to the cup—
How much reproach have I expressed even to the stars
and by it I mean the one who has tormented me—
Meaning the one who has denied me

with an eloquent tongue of tears,
With a tongue of tears, articulate
sent forth by two gushing eyes.
Sent forth by two tearful eyes

تَتوارىit conceals itself بِحلةin a robe of الأُرجُوانpurple
Its tenderness makes wine blush; that is why
Whose tenderness shames the breeze
it conceals itself in a robe of purple.
So it hides in the dress of purple
قَدhas بَرانيworn me down جَورthe tyranny of الهَوىlove وَزَمانيand my fate
لَيسَdoes not يَرثىshow pity فَماso … not أَراهُI see it; I think it يَرانيit sees me
Love’s tyranny has worn me down, and my fate
The injustice of love and time have shown me
shows no pity, so I do not think it sees me.
There is none who laments for me, so I don't expect to be seen
أَفلاis there, then, no رَحمةmercy لِصَبٍfor a lovesick lover يُقاسيendures
مِنfrom صُروفthe vicissitudes of الهَوىlove صُنوفkinds of الهَوانhumiliation
Is there, then, no mercy for a lovesick lover who endures
Is there no mercy for a youth
all kinds of humiliation from love’s vicissitudes?
Who suffers the forms of disgrace from the turns of passion?
لَيتَwould that شعريmy knowledge وَمَنand whoever تَمَنّىwishes تَعنّىwearies himself; suffers

Would that I knew—yet whoever wishes suffers,
If only I knew, and whoever wishes would care
and some wishes are, without doubt, impossible—
For some wishes are impossible, no doubt

will Time one day awaken from drunkenness,
Will time ever wake from intoxication
even though safety is impossible,
Though that would be impossible to expect

so I might see an hour of life grow serene
That I may see a moment of life clarified
for a noble person, free from Time’s drunken brawls?
For a generous one from the pack animals of time
