ثَمدscant water تَكتَفيis content بِهِwith it النَفسthe soul رنقturbid
O you who reproach me because my watering place
Is a scant, turbid pool that satisfies the soul:
بلغَةٌbare sustenance مِنfrom صَبابةlast drops العَيشlife تَكفيsuffices
وَكَثيرand an abundance مِنof الغِنىwealth يَستَرقenslaves
Bare sustenance from life's last drops suffices,
And an abundance of wealth enslaves.
مِننfavors الدونthe base إِنif فَكَرَتyou reflect مَناياdeaths
وَإِلىand to الفُقرpoverty وَالمَذَلةand humiliation طرقroads
Favors from the base, if you reflect, are deaths,
And roads to poverty and humiliation.
إِنَّماonly المَوتdeath فيin اِستِماحseeking aid from لَئيمa base man
وَجهُهُhis face عابسscowling وَوَجهُكَand your face طَلقcheerful
Death lies only in seeking a base man's aid:
His face is scowling, while yours is cheerful.
كَيفَhow يَرىsees بِالذُلin abasement لِلخَلقbefore people حرٌّa free man
وَلَهُand for him ماas long as بَقِيَhe lives عَلىupon الرَبthe Lord رزقsustenance
How can a free man see himself abased before others,
While his sustenance rests with the Lord as long as he lives?
وَلاand do not تَحطlower الأَسمالthe rags عِندَكَin your eyes قَدريmy worth
فَوَراءfor beneath الأَسمالthe rags خَيرٌgoodness وَعِتقand nobility
And let not rags lower my worth in your eyes,
For beneath the rags lie goodness and nobility.
إِنindeed إِجلالكyour honoring الغَنيّthe rich man لِنَفعٍfor gain

وَاِزدِراءand scorning الفَقيرthe poor man لُؤمbaseness وَحمقand folly
Indeed, your honoring the rich for gain
And scorning the poor are baseness and folly.

The better of your two days is a day when you earn praise,
Or when people seek your bounty.
وَخَيارand the better الثَوبينof the two robes ثَوبa robe of عَفافself-restraint

And the better of the two robes is a robe of self-restraint
That you wear, not a delicate robe of silk.
