O you who claim the sorrow of the enraptured,

And complain of the surge of longing that melts you,

Have you not heard the oud's tongue express

The plaint of a lovesick, disquieting lover?

And this reed flute, out of rapture and passion,

Moans with the moaning of one longing and forlorn.

And an impassioned, melodious singer sings:

May God water you, O days by the dune!

Where, then, is the deep sighing of longing,

And where are the first gushes of streaming tears?

For if longing stays with me, I remain

Sick at heart, a prey to sorrows.

I yearn for the beloved—and it is no wonder

When an ailing man longs for the physician.

And if separation ends my life unjustly,

For how many a stranger has parting slain!
