My heart's burning comes from the coolness of luscious saliva,

And my madness from the rose of a ripe cheek.

And my suffering comes from the eyes, and my turmoil

From the spell of a Babylonian gaze.

My blood bears witness, flowing over his cheeks,

From the Indian sword of his glance.

And my torment is the water of bliss that gleams clear

Upon the dewy embers of his cheeks.

And my nectar is the sweet saliva in his musky mouth,

    Flowing in his pearly cup.

I died drunk—alas for my soul!—yet there was no quenching

Of my burning thirst with his wine-like saliva.

My heart has not ceased complaining of a blaze

Since I watered love with a thirst-quenching cup.

Who will shelter me from the spell of a cruel eye

That drew my soul from me by a secret signal?

His glance is murderous and suspect, yet

His languid eyelids have an innocent one's excuse.

O you who turn away, who have shunned me,

And spurned me because of a lying talebearer's words,

Should I complain of you, or to you? And does

A carefree heart pity the lovesick one's plight?

Is there a way to your favor, or to patience,

Or, failing that, to swift death?
