Joy was bestowed upon the sorrowful

By a visitor who came without a watcher.

    A phantom came offering greetings,

While the stars inclined toward setting.

O my visitor, during a swoon

Brought on by longing that melts me,

May God reward the deed of the one

Who increased the cares concerning the stranger [perhaps intended: warded them off].

Indeed, I have reached a far-

off place, before which lie vast expanses of steppe.

How did you find your way to a phan-

tom now lying in the folds of the unseen?

    Love kept wasting it away,

And the pain of sorrows melting it,

Until it vanished, as though it were

    A doubt in a doubter's mind.

I complain to you of my yearning,

As the sick person complains to the physician.
