Is it, after the company departed and traveled by night,
After the party had departed and night fell,
that one like me can see—and hope for—a way to endure?
Is there hope for one like me to show patience and expect?

They journeyed by night, and lightning flashed behind their riding camels,
They traveled and lightning flashed behind their mounts,
while darkness's cloak had thinned and grown threadbare.
As the robe of darkness fluttered and flowed.

It seeks a glimpse in longing—each kind is drawn to its own—
One smells passion while the soul inclines towards its own,
of a cool, sweet, gap-toothed mouth among their women in howdahs.
With their black and tender lips and languid eyes.

And the valley's oryx rose, hoping for a glance
The valley’s winds blew towards her, filling her sight,
to carry away from the spell of one with wide eyes of brilliant white and deep black.
Drawing enchantment from a most skilful sorceress.

you see nothing but clustered spears and fleet steeds.
You see none but bent and twisted forms.

The hawk of heaven they would not escape.

Sated with blood in the evening,
rises at dawn crowned with towering glory.
In the morning crowned with glorious might.

If you had gone when they set out on their journey

O Sirius, they would have made you luggage.

I lost hope of life after them,
for certain; in matters other than parting, I cherish good hope.
Yet I have fair hope in other than desire.

The breeze of meeting has stalled after blowing
gently, and parting's north wind blew fiercely.
At ease, and the wind of parting blew destructively.

The long night has wearied you

While it was to the new moon a burdensome night.

Melt away after them and do not be frigid,
and have no refuge from passion's tyranny.
You have no refuge from the tyranny of youth.

Tomorrow my heart and breast will be
for the horses of time's calamities, and sorrow a polo mallet.
A playground for the steeds of fate and cares.

Give me a cup, o boon companion, perhaps
may find through it a way out of sorrow's noose.
I will find through it an outlet from anxiety's gloom.

And do not suppose reason, for a man—perhaps I
Think not the mind a refuge for man,
may find through it a deliverer from sorrow's noose.
The guided may be seized before reaching sanctuary.
وَلاand do not تَحسَبَنَّever suppose العَقلreason لِلمَرءِfor a man معقلاًa stronghold

And bring tales of our nights of union,
for even the fortunate may be caught through intellect itself.
Perhaps this gloom will clear in the morning.

perhaps the dawn of this sorrow will break.
The collar of distress tight only to be relieved.

For fate is veiled only so that it may be hoped for,
An apparition passed by and reached out
and distress's collar tightens only to be loosened.
Reeling from the horror of that apparition.

And a dream-phantom traveled by night until it reached a pallid man,
The flowers of nightfall felt it and shuddered,
braving all it braved of the terrors of night travel.
The full moon saw it and dodged.

وَآنسهُ بَدر السَماء فَعَرَّجا
The stars of darkness sensed it and half-closed their eyes;
It pained him, whenever he passed,
and the full moon in the sky perceived it and turned aside.
To rend the robes of darkness wherever he tread.

And it found it hard that, whenever it traveled by night,
He passed the valley of passion which was scented
it had to tear darkness's cloaks wherever night deepened.
By his scent throughout the valley's breadth.

And it passed by the valley of al-Hima, making fragrant
He had the intention to visit but met
al-Hima's reaches with its scent as its perfume spread.
On his path only the way of anxiety.

It visited a wasted man hoping for a visit,
From the length of time the eyelid was rapt with sleep
and found sorrow's passage within him barred.
If he saw the letters of destiny he would recoil.

So long had his eyelid grown familiar with sleeplessness that, if he saw
A bird dictates to me the tale of his yearning,
the letters of sleep inscribed, he would feel scruples.
Exceeding my capacity to carry my fervor and troubling me.

And a bird began dictating the tale of its sorrows,
He shunned them with indifference so I was wary,
leaving me unable to bear my longing, and disquieting me.
And hid it in the folds of his discourse and concealed it.

It hinted at turning away from them, alarming me,
My heart had not feared events,
and hid it within the tale's folds, weaving it in.
So I have come to hope for safety from your tales.

now I hope for deliverance from your tales.
Yet for me there was only death appointed.

And I had thought distance a path to patience,
The days of play turned away save for memories
but for me it was only a road to death.
Whenever fervent love kindled the heart.

The age of merriment has passed, leaving only remembrance;
Truly in this age proprieties are lost
whenever it surprises the faithful heart, that heart blazes.
And ignorance in it became more agreeable and prevalent.

Yet in this age understanding has been lost,
The leading lights were hampered from seeking the sublime,
and ignorance has become more promising and more in vogue.
So to it each morrow grew heedless.

The vulgar laugh until they gain eloquence
while every base fellow came ambling toward it.
And scowl in the face of the eloquent, stuttering.

Whenever the draught of my tears poured down
and scowled at the eloquent man, making him stammer.

No length of grief remained a tear when it broke forth
and touched the black smoke of sighs, they turned to jet.
Except what my poetry comforted.

Long sorrow left no tears whose flowing
Its breeze never stirred the sea of poetry
could bring relief—only embroidered verse remained.
With the palm of the Zephyr except surging and swelling.

Poetry nourished on tears grew delicate
at youth's hand without the sea swelling and billowing.
And its meaning resided in pure commingled nectar.

Verse that has grown more tender than tears,
When cares scalded the wounds of the heart
and whose meaning dwells in blended wine.
And the burning heart was seized with ice.

When the unwounded man feels distressed, it kindles his sorrows,
yet if it stirs the blazing heart, it brings cool relief.
