إِنindeed قَلبيmy heart كَليمintimate interlocutor نَجواكَyour whispered converse سرّاًsecretly
إِن قَلبي كَليم نَجواكَ سرّاً
وَلِسانيand my tongue رَطبmoist بِذِكراكَwith remembrance of you مغرىenthralled
وَلِساني رَطب بِذِكراكَ مغرى
Indeed, my heart is your confidant in secret converse.
My heart whispers your name secretly
And my tongue is moist with remembrance of you, enthralled.
And my tongue is wet with the mention of you
غِبتُI lost awareness حَتّىeven عَنىfrom myself بِذكركthrough remembering you سُكراًin intoxication
غِبتُ حَتّى عَنى بِذكرك سُكراً
لاnot لِأَنيbecause I أَنساكَforget you أَكثَرI repeat often ذِكراremembrance (continued next line)
لا لِأَني أَنساكَ أَكثَر ذِكرا
I became oblivious even to myself, drunk on remembering you.
I was absent to the point of drunkenness with your memory
Not because I forget you do I speak so often of
Not because I forgot you more by frequent mention
كof you (completing 'your remembrance') وَلَكنbut rather بِذاكَwith that يَجريflows لِسانيmy tongue
ك وَلَكن بِذاكَ يَجري لِساني
لاعتِناقbecause of the embrace الروحينthe two souls ماnot ثُمthere هَجرparting
لاعتِناق الروحين ما ثُم هَجر
you; rather, my tongue flows with that remembrance.
But my tongue flows with that
Because the two souls embrace, there is no parting.
Except embracing the two souls - there is no estrangement
غَيرexcept أَنthat العَيانdirect sight أَمرa thing يَسرdelights
غَير أَن العَيان أَمر يَسر
لَيسَnot يَخفيhides عَنيfrom me جَمالكyour beauty سَترa veil
لَيسَ يَخفي عَني جَمالك سَتر
Yet the sight of you is a joy.
Except that seeing you in person is easier
No veil hides your beauty from me.
Your beauty is not hidden from me by any veil
أَنتَyou فيin القَلبthe heart وَالجَوانحand the breast وَالروand the spi- (part of 'spirit')
أَنتَ في القَلب وَالجَوانح وَالرو
ح-rit (completing 'spirit') وَأَنتَand you المُنىthe hopes وَأَنتَand you الأَمانيthe wishes
ح وَأَنتَ المُنى وَأَنتَ الأَماني
You are in the heart, the breast, and the spi-
You are in my heart and my wings and my soul
rit; and you are every hope, and you are every wish.
You are my wish and you are my desires
وَصَفواthey prescribed ليfor me السَلوَّforgetfulness جَهلاًignorantly وَسَمواand they poisoned
وَصَفوا لي السَلوَّ جَهلاً وَسَموا
فَرَأونيthen they saw me أَزدادُI grow شَوقاًin longing فَوَلواso they turned away
فَرَأوني أَزدادُ شَوقاً فَوَلوا
They prescribed forgetfulness for me in ignorance, and poisoned me.
They described solace to me in ignorance and named
Then they saw my longing grow, and turned away.
Me increasingly longing so they turned away
لَمdid not أَقُلI say لَيتَنيwould that I أَراكَsee you وَلاnor لَوif only
لَم أَقُل لَيتَني أَراكَ وَلا لَو
كُلevery عَضوlimb مِنيof me يَراكَsees you مِنout of الشَوthe long- (part of 'longing')
كُل عَضو مِني يَراكَ مِن الشَو
I have not said, 'Would that I could see you,' nor 'If only...'
I did not say "if only I could see you" or "if only I could"
Every limb of mine sees you, out of long-
Every limb of me sees you from longing
ق-ing (completing 'longing') بِعَينwith an eye غَنيةhaving no need عَنof عَيانdirect sight
ق بِعَين غَنية عَن عَيان
ing, with an eye that needs no outward sight.
