If the fault and estrangement come from you,

then the lover must excuse you and be patient.

You may melt my life's essence with grief,

and I owe you praise and thanks.

My rapturous heart has defied me, so no

command holds sway over it, to my misery.

So melt it or torment it however you wish,

and with whatever you wish, for its torment is a reward—

except by offering your face's beauty to a gaze

that arouses suspicion, for that is a sin.

Had the sun done you justice, it would not have risen

except with your permission, O full moon.

And had my fate dealt justly with me concerning you,

fate would not have treacherously slain me through separation from you.
