If the fault and abandonment are yours,

Then the lover must forgive and be patient.

You may melt my very life away with grief,

And I owe you praise and thanks.

My rapturous heart has defied me, so no

Command holds sway over it, to my misery.

So melt it or torment it however you wish,

And with whatever you wish, for tormenting it earns reward—

Except by offering the beauty of your face to a gaze

That arouses suspicion, for that is a sin.

Had the sun done you justice, it would not have risen

Except with your permission, O full moon.

And had my fate dealt fairly with me concerning you,

Fate would not have murdered me by parting me from you.
