1. أَقامَ بِقَلبِهِ حُزنه

    وَفارق جفنُهُ وَسَنه

    His sorrow settled in his heart,

    And his eyelid parted from its slumber.

  2. بَكى شَوقاً وَقلَّ لَهُ

    مُحب شاقَهُ وَطَنه

    He wept with longing, and that was little for him—

    A lover whose homeland made him yearn.

  3. كَما يَشتاق قَلباً غا

    بَ عَن أَحشائِهِ بَدنه

    As his body yearns for a heart that has gone

    From its innermost depths.

  4. بَعيد قَد تَناساهُ ال

    صحاب وَخانَهُ زَمَنهُ

    Far away, already forgotten by his

    Companions, and betrayed by his times.

  5. تَغيب لُبهُ ذِكرا

    همو وَيُذيبُهُ شَجنه

    His mind is carried away by the remembrance

    Of them, and his sorrow melts him.

  6. كَطَير كُلَما دَرَس ال

    غَرام هَفا بِهِ فَننه

    Like a bird, whenever the

    Passion fades, its bough sways with it.

  7. عَصاهُ دَمعَهُ وَنَمى ال

    سِقام فَسرهُ عَلَنه

    His tears defied him, and the

    Sickness grew; his secret was laid bare.

  8. فَلا يَرقى لَهُ دَمع

    وَلَيسَت تَنقَضي محنه

    So his tears never cease,

    Nor do his trials come to an end.

  9. تَطير بِقَلبِهِ الذِكرى

    وَيَقعد جِسمُهُ وَهَنه

    Remembrance flies away with his heart,

    And his weakness keeps his body seated.
