قَدalready غابَhas vanished عَنfrom مُقلَتيmy eye مَنthe one who كانwas ناظِرُهاits pupil
وَعَوَّضتand I was given instead مِنهُin his place طُولlength اللَيلthe night وَالأَرَقand sleeplessness
Gone from my eye is the one who was its pupil.
He who was the beholder of my eyes has vanished from them
And in his place I was given the long night and sleeplessness.
And I have compensated for him with long nights and sleeplessness
فَسحتthen it poured out الدَمعَtears حَتّىuntil كَفَceased مِنfrom عَذليreproaching me
مَنthe one who كانَused to يَعذِلُنيreproach me مِنout of خيفةfear of الغَرَقdrowning
Then it poured out tears until he ceased reproaching me—
I let my tears flow until he who was blaming me for fear of drowning stopped
He who had reproached me—for fear of drowning.
I wondered, when the heart departed from my body
عَجِبتُI marveled لَماwhen نَأواthey went far away بِالقَلبwith the heart عَنfrom بَدَنيmy body
للجسمat the body بَعدafter فُراقparting from القَلبthe heart كَيفَhow بَقيit survived
I marveled, when they bore my heart far from my body,
How can the body survive after the heart’s separation?
At how the body survived after parting with the heart.
I say while passion burns inflamed in my entrails
أَقولI say وَالشَوقwhile longing فيin الأَحشاءِthe entrails مُلتَهِبٌablaze
وَلَيسَand there is no ليfor me أَمَلٌhope تطفىmay be quenched بِهِthrough it حَرقيmy burning anguish
I say, while longing blazes in my entrails,
And I have no hope that will extinguish my burning
And I have no hope through which my burning anguish might be quenched:
May you, O best one whose aid I hope for to repel harm
عَساكَmay you ياO خَيرbest مَنof those who يُرجىare looked to لِدَفعto ward off أَذىharm
تَتيحyou grant ليto me فَرجاًrelief يَحياcomes to life بِهِthrough it رَمَقيmy last spark of life
May you, O best of those looked to for warding off harm,
Grant me relief by which my remnant of life may live
Grant me relief that revives my last spark of life.
