لَئنif indeed حَلَّis lawful فيin دينthe creed الهَوىof love لَكُمfor you ظُلميwronging me
فَهَلthen is it? حَسَنٌright قَتلkilling المُحبthe lover بِلاwithout جُرمِa crime
If, in love's creed, wronging me is lawful for you,
then is it right to kill a lover who has done no wrong?
كَفىit is enough حُزناًas sorrow أَنthat لاno حَياةًlife وَلاnor رَدىdeath
وَلاnor أَخراًan end أَرجوهُI hope for it لِلحُزنto sorrow وَالسقمand sickness
It is sorrow enough to have neither life nor death,
nor an end to grief and sickness that I can hope for.
الأمَhow long? يُظلُّkeeps البينseparation يَشرَبdrinking مِنof دَميmy blood

وَيَأكُلand eats مِنof لَحميmy flesh وَيَرتاحand finds relief مِنfrom ظُلميwronging me
How long will separation keep drinking of my blood,
and eating my flesh, and finding relief in wronging me?

Ah, woe to it! Is it not time it was sated, now that I have
grown so distraught that I have come to ask my own name?

You clung to me, O sickness, until you left me
consulting my imagination about myself, yet my imagination does not recognize me.

And I set about treating my heart's illness with the east wind,
like one who seeks a cure for sickness in poison.

Whenever you travel by night, I say, “Perhaps it
will ease my anguish and lessen my care.”

But you waft their fragrance, kindling sorrow in me,
and leave the trace of patience dissolved away from my body.
تَعَلَلتI sought solace بِالأَرواحin the breezes فَاِزدَدتُbut I increased عِلَةًin sickness
فَأَسلَمَتso surrendered نَفسيmy soul لِلمَنونto death عَلىwith عِلمknowledge
I sought solace in the breezes, but grew more ill,
so my soul knowingly surrendered to death.
وَراودتand I coaxed قَلبيmy heart فيinto التَسَليseeking consolation بِغَيرِكُمin someone other than you

And I coaxed my heart to seek consolation in someone other than you,
but it deserted me, and I gained wound upon wound.

Who, then, can lend me a heart other than my own,
that would be under my command, if only for one day of my life?

And how, when thirsty, can one take comfort in a mirage
instead of water, or in a star instead of the full moon's face?

My vows, though tested by separation, are hard as your hearts,
while your pledge in love is frailer than my bones.

فَباكرهُso visit it at dawn ياO دَمعيmy tears وَراوحهُand visit it at dusk ياO وَسميmy autumn rain
Indeed, separation's hands have branded the dwelling with decay;
so visit it at dawn, O my tears, and at dusk, O my autumn rain.

At al-Liwa's edge, the lovesick lover's patience has fled,
and ruin has swept away reason amid those traces.

There I recalled days of union that had passed away;
so my longing for them grows, and my tears for them pour down.
وَأَغيدand a graceful youth يَرميaccuses العاشِقينَlovers بِظَنِهِon his suspicion
فَيَسطوthen he assails بِلاwithout ذَنبguilt وَيَقضيand judges بِماby what يَرميhe alleges
And a graceful youth accuses lovers on suspicion,
then assails them for no sin and judges by his own accusations.
تَهيمare enraptured قُلوبthe hearts العاشِقينof lovers بِطَنِهِhis belly (unclear in context)
فَتُصلىso are burned in سَعيرthe blaze الصَدof rejection مِنهُfrom him بِلاwithout إِثمsin
Lovers' hearts are enraptured [final word unclear],
so they burn in the blaze of his rejection, though guiltless.

وَتَظهَرand reveal عَيناهُhis eyes الضَمائرhidden feelings بِالرَغمdespite resistance
Love is confessed to him under compulsion when he gazes,
and his eyes lay bare hidden feelings despite resistance.

When the force of wine makes him merry, and he grows tipsy,
youthful folly shows you how it toys with sober judgment.

وَتَسكرand grows drunk مِنهُfrom him فيin الكُؤوسthe cups اِبنةthe daughter الكَرَمof the vine
The magic of his eyelids steals the drinkers' wits,
and, in the cups, the vine's daughter grows drunk on him.
لَئِنif indeed كانَwas أَضحىbecame قسمهُhis share الحسنbeauty كُلُهُall of it

فَإِنَّthen indeed الهَوىlove وَالوَجدand yearning قَدindeed أَصبَحاhave become قَسميmy share
If all beauty has become his allotted share,
then love and yearning have become my share.

And if Time, with separation, stands among my foes,
then wasting sickness, sorrow, and tears stand among my allies.

Peace upon our time of meeting, even if my sorrow grows
at its remembrance, and I die of grief.
