ياO مَنyou who جَفانيhave shunned me وَمَلاand grown weary
رِفقاًgently بِعَبدكwith your slave مَهلاgo softly
O you who have shunned me and grown weary,
Be gentle with your slave; go softly.
لَمdid not تَبقَleave عَيناكyour two eyes عُضواًa limb
ماnot أَودَعتlodged فيهِin it نَصلاa blade
Your eyes have left no limb
without lodging a blade within it.
هاتيكَthat there حَبةkernel قَلبيof my heart
عَلىover اللَظىthe blaze تَتقلّاis roasting
There is the kernel of my heart,
roasting over the blaze,
كَأَنَّهاas though it were مسكmusk خالof a beauty spot
بِجَمرby the embers of خَدكyour cheek يَصلاis scorched
as though it were the musk of a beauty spot,
scorched by the embers of your cheek.
وَتِلكَand that نَفسيmy soul فاضَتhas poured forth
أَسىgrief وَلَمand not أَتَسلىI find solace
And there is my soul, poured out
in grief, and I have found no solace,
إِلّاexcept وَإِنَّكَand indeed you are أَشهىmore desirable
مِنthan الحَياةlife وَأَحلىand sweeter
save that you are indeed more desirable
than life, and sweeter.
