ثَمدa scant pool تَكتَفيis content بِهِwith it النَفسthe soul رنقmuddy
O you who taunt me because my watering place
Is a scant, muddy pool that satisfies the soul:
بلغَةٌbare sustenance مِنfrom صَبابةthe last drops of العَيشlife تَكفيsuffices
وَكَثيرand much مِنof الغِنىwealth يَستَرقenslaves
A little sustenance from life's last drops suffices,
And much wealth enslaves.
مِننthe favors of الدونthe base إِنif فَكَرَتyou reflect مَناياdeaths
وَإِلىand toward الفُقرpoverty وَالمَذَلةand humiliation طرقpaths
The favors of the base, if you reflect, are death,
And paths to poverty and humiliation.
إِنَّماonly المَوتdeath فيin اِستِماحbegging from لَئيمa base man
وَجهُهُhis face عابسfrowning وَوَجهُكَand your face طَلقcheerful
Death lies only in begging from a base man:
His face is frowning, while yours is cheerful.
كَيفَhow يَرىbe seen بِالذُلin humiliation لِلخَلقbefore people حرٌّa free man
وَلَهُand for him ماas long as بَقِيَhe lives عَلىincumbent upon الرَبthe Lord رزقsustenance
How can a free man be seen abased before others,
When, as long as he lives, his sustenance is the Lord's charge?
وَلاand let not تَحطlower الأَسمالrags عِندَكَin your eyes قَدريmy worth
فَوَراءfor behind الأَسمالthe rags خَيرٌgoodness وَعِتقand nobility
And let not rags lower my worth in your eyes:
For behind the rags lie goodness and nobility.
إِنindeed إِجلالكyour honoring الغَنيّthe rich man لِنَفعٍfor gain
وَاِزدِراءand scorning الفَقيرthe poor man لُؤمbaseness وَحمقand folly
Indeed, your honoring the rich for gain
And scorning the poor are baseness and folly.
خَيرthe better of يَوميكyour two days يَومa day تَكسَبyou earn حَمداًpraise
فيهِon it أَوor يَستَميحseek رَفدكyour bounty خَلقpeople
The better of your two days is one when you earn praise,
Or when people seek your bounty.
وَخَيارand the better of الثَوبينthe two robes ثَوبa robe of عَفافself-restraint
تَكتَسيهِyou wear it لاnot ثَوبَa robe of خَزsilk cloth يَرقis delicate
And the better of the two robes is a robe of self-restraint
That you wear, not a robe of delicate silk.
