Is there a companion for the love-distraught lover?

Or a path to noble patience?

Or, as they say, when the one departs

whom you love, is despair of him a companion?

Far from it! Forgetfulness was not made for a lover

passion-stricken and beset by the enchantment of eyes.

O my reproacher, do you think I have been charmed

by your patchwork words and embellishments?

    وَيَزيدُها وَيَجف مِنكَ الريق

    Reproach runs out, but my tears do not subside;

it only swells them, while your mouth runs dry.

Do you imagine that my heart has not melted

with grief, nor been consumed by separation?

And a songbird—while lightning strikes its flint

into a fire that burns the curved ribs—

dictates its sorrows to me, and they are written

in tears by an eye made for weeping.

And the stars seek, from the Milky Way's river,

a drink: some float, some swim, and some are drowned.

Thunder makes the clouds weep with its rebukes,

while the garden's beloved face smiles.

And it is as though its pebbles and its soil

were gleaming pearls and powdered ambergris.

The flowers, in rapture, break through its soil,

and fragrant musk wafts through the gardens.

The river laments its passion in its murmuring,

and the bough is its adored and cherished beloved.

The wind trails her train above it

and keeps polishing its cheek until it shines.

The sweetness of her breeze refreshes the distressed,

    and its perfume anoints bodies.

My soul is drunk from remembering him; I cannot

break free of it, nor do I sober from it.

How many a night after parting have I passed,

with wailing and sobbing in its darkness.

There is never any path for sleep to reach

my eyelid, nor any night-visit from his phantom.

All night they fought me—while darkness's skirts

trailed—for what life remained: the lightning flashes.

They drew sharp swords against me from their gleam,

until rending had its fill of my heart.

So my soul clung to the skirts of hope,

and gained a reprieve until an appointed time,

until morning's face cast off its veil

and rending fell upon the robes of darkness.

Then persistent longing doubled and wasted me:

a deep-seated passion, clinging to the heart.

And I was cast into deep seas of grief, as though I were

a night-visiting phantom cleaving the heart of darkness.

Nothing cheers the sorrowful but a sound

of song, delightful verse, and pure wine.

So gaze into the mirror of the wineglass: it is

an elegant sight that delights those who look.

Or do you not see the face of joy rising

from where the wine-strainer sheds its tears?

And make the mellow string speak, for it is

a singer worthy of being listened to.

And receive what it recites as it bows

before the cup—the melodies of the ewer.

And look at the bubbles' rapture and dancing

as the cups applaud with their wine.

As though the pearls of bubbles were tears

in inflamed eyes whose kohl is carnelian.

    يَكفيكَ مِنهُ مُؤنس وَعَشيق

    Make a book your drinking companion, to delight in;

it suffices you as companion and beloved.

How much have men of letters stored within their pages:

wisdom too vast for Time's own breast to hold!

So be content with that, and do not be fooled by the smiles of those

you meet: there is no friend above the earth.

No one remains sincere when I befriend him

for a day, nor any firm covenant that endures.

So sever fellowship with the base, for their love

is falsehood, and their affection's purity is in tatters.

Let go of hope for peace with the nights: they are

war, and most of their kindness is ingratitude.

And endure the claws of bare subsistence, for it is

kind to the freeborn when time turns harsh.

Let neither a worthy man shake your trust in God—

one denied wealth—nor an ignorant man well provided for.

The deprived must surely be provided for from

the abundance of the unseen, and the fettered be freed.

Patience with the reversals of time, for

the nights' way is only relief and straitness.

The base have outstripped the noble in reaching wealth

through their luck: the one ahead is the one left behind.

O Time, enough! How often you wrong a young man

whom you have burdened with what he can scarcely bear:

    فَيَروح لَم تَبتلّ مِنهُ عُروق

    the chill of death, while grit has afflicted him;

yet he departs with not a vein of his moistened.

A face, though the face of his time is frowning,

cheerful and, despite harsh calamities, tender.

And limbs exhausted by a resolve

grown weighty, and a heart that is a brother to sorrows.

I shall die if hope proves false, and be enclosed

in a lonely grave, far away in the wilderness.

And though I have restrained my speech from complaint,

the tongue of my condition and my tears are unrestrained.
