Even if wronging me is lawful for you in love's creed,

is it right, then, to kill a lover without a crime?

It is sorrow enough that there is neither life nor death,

nor an end I can hope for to grief and sickness.

How long will separation keep drinking my blood,

devouring my flesh and delighting in wronging me?

Ah, woe to it! Is it not time it was sated, now that I

have grown so distraught that I ask what my own name is?

You have clung to me, O sickness, until you have left me

consulting my imagination about myself, yet my imagination fails to recognize me.

And I set about curing my heart's sickness with the east wind,

like one who seeks a cure for sickness with poison.

When you pass by night, I say, 'Perhaps it

will ease my anguish and lessen my worry.'

But you waft their scent and kindle grief in me,

and leave the vestige of patience dissolved from my body.

I sought solace in the breezes, but my sickness grew,

so I knowingly surrendered my soul to death.

And I coaxed my heart to find solace in others than you,

but it deserted me, and I suffered wound upon wound.

Who, then, will lend me a heart other than my own,

one that would be under my command, if only for a day?

And how, in thirst, can one find solace in a mirage

instead of water, or in a star instead of the full moon's face?

My vows, despite separation's testing, are as firm as your hearts,

while your pledge of love is frailer than my bones.

    فَباكرهُ يا دَمعي وَراوحهُ يا وَسمي

    Indeed, separation's hands have marked the dwelling with decay;

so visit it at dawn, my tears, and at evening, my autumn rain.

The lover's patience withdrew beside al-Liwa,

and affliction swept away reason at that ruined site.

    فَوَجدي لَها يَنمو وَدَمعي لَها يَهمي

    There I recalled days of union that had passed away;

so my longing for them grows, and my tears for them pour down.

And a graceful youth accuses lovers on his suspicions,

then assails the guiltless and judges by his own accusations.

Lovers' hearts are bewildered by his [unclear word],

and burn in the blaze of his rejection, though innocent.

Love is confessed to him by force when he gazes,

and his eyes reveal hidden thoughts against one's will.

When wine's surge makes him exuberant and he grows tipsy,

he shows you how youthful dalliance toys with reason.

The magic of his eyelids steals the drinkers' wits,

and in the cups the vine's daughter grows drunk on him.

If indeed all beauty has become his allotted share,

then love and longing have become my share.

And if Time, with separation, is among my foes,

then wasting sickness, grief, and tears are among my allies.

Peace be upon the time of meeting, though greater grows

my grief at its remembrance, and I die of anguish.
