إِنindeed المَنيةdeath فيin الهَوىlove
إِن المَنية في الهَوى
لاno شَكَdoubt حادِثةthe calamity of النَوىseparation
لا شَكَ حادِثة النَوى
Indeed, death in love
is, without doubt, the calamity of separation.
وَأَشُدُّand harsher مِنهاthan it أَنthat مِنthe one whom
وَأَشُدُّ مِنها أَن مِن
نَهواهُwe love him يَصحَبُهُaccompanies him السوىanother
نَهواهُ يَصحَبُهُ السوى
And harsher still is that the one
we love has another at his side.
قَدindeed قُلتI said لَماwhen أَصبَحواthey were at dawn
قَد قُلت لَما أَصبَحوا
مُتَحَمِلينَdeparting عَنfrom اللَوىal-Liwa
مُتَحَمِلينَ عَن اللَوى
I said, when morning found them
departing from al-Liwa:
ياO قَلبheart ماnot مِنany حِيلَةٍrecourse
يا قَلب ما مِن حِيلَةٍ
خَلقcreated الأَسىsorrow لَكَfor you وَالجَوىand burning heartache
خَلق الأَسى لَكَ وَالجَوى
O heart, there is no recourse;
sorrow and burning heartache were created for you.
مَنwho ليfor me يَعيشlives فيin الحِمىthe sanctuary
مَن لي يَعيش في الحِمى
كَالبَرقlike lightning أَومَضَhe flashed وَاِنطَوىand vanished
كَالبَرق أَومَضَ وَاِنطَوى
Who lives for me within the sanctuary?
Like lightning, he flashed and vanished.
سَبَقَcame first القَضاfate إِنindeed الحماdeath (word continues)
سَبَقَ القَضا إِن الحما
مcompletion of 'death' إِذاwhen دَناdraws near عَزَّbecomes hard to obtain الدَواthe remedy
م إِذا دَنا عَزَّ الدَوا
Fate came first; indeed, death,
when it draws near, makes a remedy hard to find.
ياO مَنwho لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick lover مُستَهاlove-distraught (word continues)
يا مَن لِصَبٍّ مُستَها
مcompletion of 'love-distraught' ماتَdied ظُلماًunjustly فيin الهَوىlove
م ماتَ ظُلماً في الهَوى
Oh, who will aid a love-distraught lover
who died unjustly in love?
