لِمَنwhose طَللa ruined dwelling بَعدafter القطينthe dwellers تَغَيَراhas changed
عَرَفتُI learned بِهِthrough it كَنَهُthe essence of الأَسىgrief إِذwhen تَنَكَراit became unrecognizable
Whose is this ruined dwelling, changed since its people left?
Through it I learned grief's true depths, when it became unrecognizable.
تَجرّdrag بِهِacross it هَوجraging الرِياحthe winds ذُيولَهاtheir trailing hems
فَأَضحىso it became كَجسميlike my body بالياًworn away مثلَlike ماwhat تَرىyou see
Across it the raging winds drag their trailing hems,
so it has grown wasted like my body, as you see.
أَحقmore deserving مِنthan المَقتولone slain ظُلماًunjustly بِرَحمةof mercy
مُشوقٌa yearning lover رَأىsaw ماwhat هاجَstirred مِنهُwithin him التَذَكُراremembrance
More deserving of mercy than one unjustly slain
is a yearning lover who saw what stirred his memories.
وَاعذرand most excusable مَنthose who قَدhave ماتَdied غَمّاًof grief وَحَسرةand anguish
مُحبٌّa lover رَأىsaw ربعthe dwelling of الأَحِبةthe loved ones مقفراdeserted
And most excusable among those who died of grief and anguish
is a lover who saw his loved ones' dwelling deserted.
فَياso, O جارُneighbor of أَحبابيmy loved ones وَإِنeven though هِجتِyou stirred ليin me الأَسىgrief
سَقاكِmay it water you فَروّاكِand then drench you السَحابthe clouds مُبَكِراearly in the morning
So, O neighbor of my loved ones, though you stir my grief,
may the clouds water you and drench you early in the morning.
وَصادِحةand a songbird ناحَتwailed فَهاجَتso she stirred بَلابِليmy anguish
وَأَجرىand made flow بُكاهاher weeping دَمعthe tears of عَينيَmy eyes أَحمَراred
And a songbird wailed, stirring my anguish,
and her weeping made the tears of my eyes flow red.
وَأَحسَستُand I felt فيin الأَحشاءِthe entrails لِلوَجدof longing سورةa fierce surge
فَبِتُso I spent the night كَأَنَّas though السُمَّpoison فيin جَسَديmy body سَرىhad spread
And in my entrails I felt a fierce surge of longing,
so I passed the night as though poison coursed through my body.
تَسيلbleed جِراحيmy wounds كُلَماwhenever أَظلَمgrows dark الدُجاthe night-darkness
وَتَشتَدand intensify آلاميmy pains إِذاwhen الصُبحُthe dawn أَسفَراshines forth
My wounds bleed whenever the night grows dark,
and my pains intensify when dawn shines forth.
إِذاwhenever قُلتُI say فَيضَthe flood of الدَمعtears قَدhas أَطفأَquenched الجَوىburning grief
تَصاعدrise up أَنفاسthe breaths of الأَسىgrief فَتَسعراso it flares up
Whenever I say the flood of tears has quenched my burning grief,
the sighs of sorrow rise, and it blazes anew.
وَإِنand if قُلتُI say غاضَhas run dry الدَمعthe tears مِماfrom what سَجمتهُI have shed it
تَذَكَرتُI recalled أَيامthe days of اللُقاmeeting فَتَفَجراso they gushed forth
And if I say my tears have run dry from all I have shed,
I recall the days of meeting, and they gush forth again.
وَلَوand if كانَwere مِماamong what يُمكنis possible الصَبرpatience بَعدafter أَنthat

And if patience were possible after
they went far away, I would be more capable of it than anyone else.

وَتَفضحهُand expose him الأَشواقlongings مَهماhowever much تَسَتراhe conceals himself
Passion comes between the lover and his heart,
and longings expose him, however much he conceals himself.
فَمِنso who لِمحبfor a lover أَخلصhas purified الحُبlove سَبكهُhis casting

فَأًصبَحso he became شَخصاًa figure مِنfrom غَرامpassion مُصَوراfashioned
Who, then, will aid a lover whom love has refined in the casting,
so he has become a figure fashioned from passion?
وَلَمand did not يَلهِنيdistract me عِنهُمfrom them وَقَدthough already ذُبتُI melted حَسرَةwith anguish
سِواهُمanyone other than them وَعَهديand my pledge بِعدَهُمafter their departure ماnot تَغَيراhas changed
Nor, though I have melted with anguish, have I been distracted from them
by anyone else; and my pledge has not changed since they left.
كَأَنَّas though عُيونيmy eyes لَيسَdo not تُبصرsee غَيرَهُمanyone but them
وَماand not خَلقتwere created إِلّاexcept لِتَبكيto weep وَأَسهَراand I keep vigil
It is as though my eyes see no one but them,
and were created only to weep while I stay awake.

And I would ransom with my soul one whose pledge is frail, with languid eyelids,
downcast-eyed, with a bewitching gaze and dark irises against brilliant whites.

Whenever his telltale eye casts a glance,
it divulges secrets that had been concealed.

He chooses to forget an exile who, whenever he recalls home,
finds its memory pains his heart, which breaks apart.
عَذيريwho will defend me? مِنagainst طولthe length of الحَياةlife مَعwith النَوىseparation
وَمِنand against جَلَدfortitude أَودىhas perished وَصَبرand patience تَغَيراhas changed
Who will defend me against life prolonged in separation,
and against fortitude that has perished and patience that has changed?

And I would be happy if death overtook me swiftly,
but no—I am wretched in life, as you see.
