And one pampered and exultant knows nothing of what
And a pampered, joyful one, unaware of what
I endure from my unceasing, successive longings.
I endure from my recurring longings.
لَوif يَرتَضيhe would accept بِالروحwith the soul عَنin exchange for المامةٍa fleeting visit
مِنfrom طَيفِهِhis phantom ماnot قُلتI would say إِلّاexcept هاhere هِيَهit is
If he would accept my soul in exchange for a dream-visit
If he would accept my soul for a fleeting visit
from his phantom, I would say only, “Here it is.”
From his phantom, I would only say, 'Here it is.'
أَبَداًforever تَحمِلُنيburden me with السِقامsickness جُفونُهُhis eyelids
فَتَذيبُنيso they melt me الإِسقامailments وَهِيَwhile they كَماas هِيَهthey are
Forever his eyelids burden me with sickness;
His eyelids forever burden me with sickness;
the maladies melt me away, while they remain just as they were.
So ailments melt me away, while those eyelids remain unchanged.
وَتَزيدand they enhance لِلرائيfor the beholder مَعانيqualities حُسنِهِhis beauty
وَجَمالِهِand his loveliness مَعdespite أَنَّهاthat they are مُتَناهِيَهat their utmost
And for the beholder, they add new dimensions to his beauty
And they enhance, for the beholder, the qualities of his beauty
and loveliness, though they themselves have reached perfection.
And his loveliness, though these are already at their utmost.

They said that I was suffering from a fever; then his fever lavishly draped
They said he complained of fever; his fever draped
my wasted bones in robes of tears.
Robes of tears over my worn-out bones.
وَشَكَوتand I complained ماwhat يَشكوhe complains of وَباتَتand it spent the night مُقلَتيmy eye

I lamented what he suffers, and all night my eye
And I complained of what he complains of, and my eye spent the night
wept for him through bleeding lids.
Weeping over him with bleeding eyelids.
ياO رَبLord خَلّlet غَليلburning thirst جِسميmy body وَحدَهُit alone

O Lord, let the burning anguish of my body alone
O Lord, let my body's burning thirst alone
complain of wasting sickness, and send him health.
Complain of wasting sickness, and send him health.
