لَقَدindeed هانَhas become insignificant عِنديin my eyes العَدلjustice فيin جانبthe sphere of الحُبlove
وَحالَتand changed بِهِthrough it حاليmy condition فَأَنكرنيso failed to recognize me صَحبيmy companions
Justice has indeed come to mean little to me beside love;
Justice seems trivial to me next to love;
and through it my state changed, so my companions no longer recognized me.
My state has changed because of it, so my friends deny me.
وَلَمand not يَكُwas مِنof شَأنيmy nature الشِكايةcomplaining وَالبُكاand weeping
وَلَوeven if جَلَّwas great ماwhat أَلقىI suffer فَقَدyet indeed أَصبَحاboth have become دَأبيmy habit
Complaining and weeping were not my way,
It was not my way to complain and weep,
however great my suffering; yet both have become my habit.
Even if my afflictions were serious, they have become my habit.
وَماand not الحُبlove إِلّاexcept مُقلةan eye دَمعَهاits tears دَمblood
وَهمٌand sorrow عَلىupon هَمٍّsorrow وَكَربٌand anguish عَلىupon كَربanguish
And love is nothing but an eye whose tears are blood,
Love is but tears flowing from anguished eyes
and sorrow upon sorrow, and anguish upon anguish.
Sorrow after sorrow and grief after grief.
فَياso, O مَنwho لَعينfor an eye لاnot تَملُّtires مِنof البُكاweeping
وَياand O مَنwho لِقَلبfor a heart لاnot يَفيقcomes to its senses مِنfrom الحُبlove
So who will aid an eye that never tires of weeping?
So weep continually, o distressed eyes!
And who will aid a heart that never sobers from love?
O heart that will not awaken from love!
يَعزُّis painful عَلىfor القَلبthe heart المُتَيمenslaved by love بَعدَكُمafter your departure
بِأَنيin that I أَرىsee مَنone whom لاnot أَودI love إِلىat جَنبيmy side
It pains the love-enslaved heart, after your departure,
My orphan heart grieves when you are gone,
that I see one I do not love beside me.
For I see those near me whom I do not love.
أَنادمهُI drink with him مُستملياًasking him to speak وَحديثهُand his talk
وَصورَتُهُand his appearance ماwhat لاnot يَخفweighs lightly عَلىupon قَلبيmy heart
I drink with him, asking him to speak; yet his talk
I converse with them merely to pass time
and his appearance weigh heavily on my heart.
While my heart hides nothing from itself.
وَليand I have سَكَنa beloved who brings repose أَشهىmore delightful إِلَيَّto me حَديثُهُhis talk
مِنthan القرقفwine المَمزوجmixed بِالباردwith cold water العَذبsweet
And I have a beloved, my solace, whose talk is sweeter to me
Yet I find most delightful the words
than wine mixed with cold, sweet water:
Of one whose voice is like cold, sweet drink.
بِسائلwith one who asks عَنabout حاليmy condition وَيَصفيand makes pure الوِدادaffection ليfor me
وَيقلقهُand troubles him بَعديmy absence وَيَرتاحand he delights مِنin قُربيmy nearness
one who asks how I fare and gives me pure affection,
He asks after me and shows affection for me,
whom my absence troubles and my nearness delights.
My absence troubles him and my presence gives comfort.
وَلاand no عُذرexcuse لِلمُشتاقfor the yearning lover فيin هَجرforsaking الفوunclear; likely the beloved
وَلَوeven if كانَhe were مَحجوباًhidden بِحجبbehind veils مِنof القَضبswords
And the yearning lover has no excuse for forsaking [the beloved; text unclear],
Absence cannot be excused, even if one is veiled
even if he were hidden behind veils of swords,
By barriers of plaited twigs.
وَلَوeven if عُرِضَتwere placed مِنfrom دُونِهِthis side of him شقةa long stretch النَوىof separation
وَكَوبدand were endured فيهاalong it كُلevery مُستَعضلintractable difficulty صَعبhard
even if a long stretch of separation were set between us,
If between us there gaped the pit of misery
and every intractable hardship had to be endured along it.
Where every miserable wretch must struggle,
وَلَكنهُbut it is that جارhas dealt unjustly الزَمانtime مَعtogether with الهَوىpassion
وَأَظهَرand displayed أَنواعvarious kinds of العَداوَةenmity وَالحَربand war
But time has joined passion in dealing unjustly,
Still, he is a companion of the days with passion
and shown enmity and war in many forms.
And shows all manner of enmity and war.
وَلَيسَand there is not مَعin the face of الأَقدارfate's decrees لِلمَرءfor a person حيلةany recourse
فَلاso there is no بُدَّalternative مِنto شَكوىcomplaining of الخَطوبcalamities إِلىto الرَبthe Lord
And a man has no recourse against fate's decrees,
Man has no stratagem against the decrees of fate;
so there is no choice but to complain of calamities to the Lord.
He can but complain of misfortune to his Lord.
