Blow gently, by God, O breeze of Najd,
Breathe, O breeze of Najd, upon a heart brimming with passion,
upon a heart overflowing with longing.

May you hide the scorching heat of heartache
From a liver that prays for the scorching of separation.
from a liver burning in separation's blaze.

The flood of my tears nearly drowns me,
Yet my heart feels no chill.
yet my liver feels no coolness.

The sea, with its flood, cannot quench,
The latent fire that burns within.

My liver would have set them ablaze.
my liver would surely burn it with its blaze.

Illness has made my body a warning,
Yet I remain cloaked by apathy.
but I am concealed beneath a cloak.

And it has left of me nothing but tears
And an outpouring soul.
streaming down, and a long-drawn breath.

I would ransom you, O you who broke me by turning away,
Without cause, breaking our vow.
without any fault—why did you break my covenant?
I have found in loving you the fires of torment,

فَالنار عِندي كَجِنان الخُلد
In loving you I have grown accustomed to sorrow's fires,
To me, fire is like the gardens of eternity.
so fire, to me, is like the gardens of eternity.

By the right of Him who decreed all this
What do you seek to gain from one so loyal?
upon me—what do you seek by spurning me?
If you wish to turn me away with rejection,

who, O cruel one, will come to my aid against you?
Or have I given all of my beauty,

Or if I had bestowed beauty in full,
When all of my love lies with you?
then all love has come to dwell with me.
I have naught but my soul, if you accept it,

I have nothing but my soul; if you accept it,
You do me a great favor, that is the extent of my pursuit.
you will have granted my wish, and that is my utmost aim.
You take joy in tormenting me,

you can never do without it.

While my body lies cold after I am gone?
Alas for my liver, for one who shunned me after my departure!

Neither union nor separation I see will avail.

A jealousy possesses me that surpasses all madness,
Yet with you lies the essence of sanity.
yet in love's creed it is wisdom itself.

I have spent my resources and my life upon it,
And for you went beyond all bounds.
and in love I have carried myself beyond every limit.

For love after me leads only to ruin.
for love is contagious, and passion kills.

I see you raving; I do not see you guiding.
