Be patient: hardship surely has relief,
Slowly! For hardship ease will come
Just as night entails the breaking of dawn.
As night demands the dawn will bloom

Through the fine stewardship of al-Fath, in whom hope is placed,
With hopeful sight of victory near
The Umayyad Mosque's hope prospered.
The Umayyad mosque relief will cheer

Its state did lately much complain
To a gaze that would attend to it, of its need.
To watching eyes its need was plain

When sixteen hundred fifty-one
And six, then fifty, were counted with them.
In order passed and were gone

By the aid of the One, record the Umayyad Mosque's date:
Al-Farid's aid let praise unlock
Through Fath Allah, it has gained joy.
In God's conquest joy we flock

So succor from the Creator reached it,
Succor from God came as a boon
Just as rain suddenly surprises the mountain passes.
Like rain that smites the dunes at noon

And then, when the wind's trailing skirts swept past,
The winds' tails then did slash and sting
They nearly stirred up clouds of dust within it.
Nearly raising up a bitter thing

And it lacked matting; had due regard been paid
No mat he had, though it's agreed
To its binding rights, they would have floored it with teak.
To spread a mat is right indeed

Repairing and tending it earns divine reward;
For service done, reward is due
And even roofing it with ivory would be little for it.
Scant covering, despite what's true

Were windows, beauteous to behold
Delighted the eye with patterning and cohesion,
Delighting sight with beams of gold

Became fragments, each shunning the others in isolation:
Now strewed in pieces, shunned apart
So there was no joining there, nor any pairing.
No joinings there, nor doubled part

His service's due he did maintain
What pleases the supplicant and the One invoked.
Pleasing the worshipped lord again

Each lesson he renewed with care
Religious knowledge through inquiry and argument.
To spread religion's light and share

Rites restored, their beauty anew
So its splendor returned to it and settled there.
Returned as simply duty's due

A man of resolve, with one word spoken
With a single word he cut short the wrangling.

And if calamities struck and grew dark,
When perils loom, confusions rise
We saw his judgment as a lamp amid them.
His view reveals where safety lies

How many crises, hard to cure

In Damascus, by him found their lure

With purpose upright, not crooked, bent
And firm judgment in which you see no crookedness.
And resolve no flaws did ever dent

Virtues pure, so if he's assailed
Against him—a brazen offender—they turn bitter and briny.
His calm to raging seas has failed
