عَلىwith ثِقَةcertainty بِاتلافيof my ruin وَعلمand knowledge
أحبكI love you بِاختياريby my own choice لاnot بِرَغميagainst my will
Certain and fully aware of my ruin,
With trust in my integrity and knowledge
I love you by my own choice, not against my will.
I love you by my choice, not by force
بِنَفسيwith my soul as ransom مَنthe one who يُعذِبُهاtorments it وَيَجنيand wrongs me
بِغَيرwithout جِنايةan offense منيon my part وَجُرمand crime
My soul be ransom for the one who torments it and wrongs me,
Who tortures and reaps from my soul
Without offense or crime on my part.
Without crime from me or guilt
وَبيand with myself as ransom مَنthe one who زارَنيvisited me مِنwith غَيرno وَعدpromise
وَلَمand not يَكhad been ذاكَthat يَخطرcrossing the mind ليto me بِوَهمin thought
And may I be ransom for the one who visited me without a promise,
And who visited me without a promise
Though that had never crossed my mind.
That was not even a figment of my imagination
رَثىhe took pity مِنfrom بَعدafter ماthat قَدalready كانَhe had been يَجفوacting coldly
لَماfor what لاقَيتI endured مِنof كَمَدٍanguish وَغَمand grief
He took pity, after having been unkind,
He grieved after he had been aloof
On the anguish and grief I had endured.
When I met with sorrow and worry
فَزارَso he visited الصَبthe lovesick lover يُقدمهُpreceding him بَشيرa bearer of good news
كَماjust as طَلَعَrose الهِلالthe crescent moon عَقيبjust after نجمa star
So he visited the lovesick lover, a herald preceding him,
So the young man came to give good news
As the crescent rises in the wake of a star.
Like the crescent moon rising after a star
وَقَدand already لَبسhe donned السَوادblack clothing وَجاءَand he came يَسعىhurrying
كَماjust as شَقَpierced الحَنادسthe deepest darkness بَدرa full moon تَمfullness
And he had donned black and came hurrying,
And he had worn black and came rushing
As a full moon pierces the deepest darkness.
As the full moon split through the darkness
فَأَقسمso I swear صادِقاًtruthfully بِمَنby the one who اِبتَلانيafflicted me
وَمَنand the one who جَعَلَmade الضَناwasting illness وَالسَقمand sickness قَسميmy lot
So I swear truthfully by the one who afflicted me,
So he swore sincerely by Him who tested me
And by the one who made wasting and sickness my lot:
And who made grief and illness my destiny
لَقَدindeed مَزجmingled الهَوىlove روحاًa soul بِروحwith a soul
وَماand not قرنjoined اللُقاmeeting جِسماًa body بِجسمwith a body
Love has indeed mingled soul with soul,
Passion has mingled soul with soul
Yet meeting has not joined body to body.
And meeting has not joined body with body
وَكَيفَand how وَقَدand already أَذابَhas melted الحُبlove جِسميmy body
وَقَدand already أَفنىhas consumed السقامsickness دَميmy blood وَلَحميand my flesh
And how could it, when love has melted my body,
And how could it when passion has melted my body
And sickness has consumed my blood and flesh?
And sickness has consumed my blood and flesh
فَلاso no شَيءٌthing سِوىexcept نَفسٍa breath خَفيٍfaint
وَدَمعand tears كَإِنهِمالlike the downpour of المُزنrainclouds يَهميstream down
So nothing remains but a faint breath,
So there is nothing left but a gentle soul
And tears streaming like a downpour from rainclouds.
And tears pouring like the rain of the grieved
