O you who claim the sorrow of the impassioned,

and complain of longing's melting fury,

have you not heard the lute's tongue voice

the lament of a lovesick, troubled lover?

And this reed flute, from rapture and longing,

moans with a sorrowful lover's yearning.

And a sweet-voiced singer, filled with longing, sings:

“May God water you, O days by the sand dune!”

Where, then, is the heaving of sighs in longing,

and where the first rush of streaming tears?

For if longing spares me, I remain

sick at heart, a prey to sorrows.

I yearn for the beloved; it is no wonder

when the ailing long for the physician.

And if separation unjustly ends my life,

for how many a stranger has parting slain!
