I knew with certainty after they departed

that meeting is life, and separation is death.

I say, when they whispered of departure before dawn,

while my tears poured down like a dark cloud:

Has the lover a heart other than the one burned

by rejection’s fire, while parting’s dinar blazes?

I wandered in longing before the caravan as they traveled by night,

and the company was bewildered by the depth of the darkness.

    وَإِن خبت بِدُموعي مرة نَزَلوا

    When the fire within my ribs shone for them, they walked;

and if my tears quenched it for a moment, they dismounted.

O singer, sing me what stirred me when he chanted

to a caravan of pale camels, while the sky’s caravan journeys on.

The caravan has increased my anguish; sing me a ramal tune,

perhaps ramal will carry me away from what ails me.

And soothe the heart, for today it is departing,

with verse by those slain through love’s crimes.

And recite—perhaps you may revive my last breath with it:

“We greet you; so be safe, O ruined dwelling!”

God bless that bygone life, when union was unbroken,

upon the dune—may the pouring raincloud water it!

    وَعَن حَياتي وَروحي لي بِهِ شُغل

    And a fawn, heedless of my ruin in loving him;

my absorption in him distracts me from my life and soul.

The rose yearns to kiss his cheek,

and that is something beyond the rose’s reach.

Kohl has mingled with enchantment in his eyelids,

and a sway accompanies the suppleness of his frame.

Time has been unjust in separating us—and when

has Time ever brought joy with anything that does not pass away?
