An eye forsaken by its slumber,

    its tears flow forever.

A wasted body would ransom you,

    its heart lovesick and terrified.

“He would ransom you,” I said; whenever

you turn away, his passion grows.

Longing has constricted him; wide open

    are the fissures within him.

He wastes away, mourned with the sounds

    of sighing by his ribs.

He complains to you of glances

that never cease to terrify him.

No sooner did you look at him

    than his lifeblood gushed forth.

My lord, do not destroy your lover,

    for love is his intercessor.

O you to whom all beauty belongs,

    while all passion is mine:

if union for the lovelorn is something

that can never come to pass,

then for the heart it is likewise impossible

    to forget or turn back.

Put him off with false promises of a meeting,

so perhaps his panic will subside.

How often he has spent the night awaiting death,

    with sickness as his bedfellow.

When you forsook him, no help came from

    his weeping or his submission.

So he died there, never discovering

the reason for the rejection that slew him.
