    وَجِسمٌ حَشوهُ سقمُ

    A heart filled with pain,

    and a body filled with sickness;

    وَطَرف دَمعه ديم

    an eye whose kohl is sleeplessness,

    and an eye whose tears are steady rains;

    a heart whose longing grows,

    whether they draw near or sever their bond.

    And a graceful youth whose glance probes

    our hidden thoughts and casts suspicion.

    So the inner thought is revealed to him,

    though no [mouth] had spoken there.

    He wounds me with his eye,

    with wounds that do not heal.

    So I perish among my companions,

    and he revives me without their knowing.

    Scant in justice and fairness,

    though he is both adversary and judge.

    He [believes] my enemies concerning me,

    then holds me accountable for what they alleged.

    He torments me without a sin,

    and shuns me and takes revenge.

    And strands of complaint,

    whose pearls, however, are words.

    وَإِنثُرها فَتنَتظِمُ

    I mutter them, yet they outrun me;

    I scatter them, and they form a string,

    like the tears of a love-stricken lover:

    he wipes them away, yet they stream down.

    سَهُ وَاللَيل يَنَهزم

    And a drinking companion whose drowsiness I drove away,

    while the night was retreating;

    وَثَغر البَرق يَبتَسم

    the eyelid of its cloud was weeping,

    and lightning's mouth was smiling;

    dawn's army was striking the host

    of darkness and storming through.

    It had, in the [hue] of my tears, when

    it appeared in its east, a banner.

    تَصب فَتَتجلى الظُلم

    With clear wine diluted with water,

    poured out so that darkness clears;

    wine that had lived through ages,

    so that age wore away its body.

    And it vanished through its fineness, until

    its existence seemed like nothingness.

    So I said, “[Do you not] see my sorrow?

    I fend it off, yet it presses upon me.

    [Do you doze], turning away from me,

    and neglect me and do me wrong?

    Nothing dispels the soul's sorrow

    but wine and melody.

    Will you, then, help me?

    For a noble man's friendship is a prize.”

    So he lowered his head in shyness,

    and [sang], bashful as he was:

    “Reproach that never ends,

    and love that cannot be concealed.”

    So he fanned the fire of my longings,

    and longing and pain grew.

    For you have become certain that love

    is an ailment that cannot be cured.
