قَدalready مَلَكَtaken hold of الأَحبابَthe loved ones وَالصَحبand the companions
Turn back from your madness, O heart.
It has taken hold of loved ones and companions.
كَمhow long ذاthis الوَلَوعardor وَكُلand every نارfire جَوىlove's anguish
خَمدتdied down وَنارand the fire جَواكَof your love's anguish لَمhas not تَخبgone out
How long this ardor, when every fire of love's anguish
has died down, yet the fire of your anguish remains unquenched?
وَالامَand how long تَحييكrevives you المُنىhopes أَبَداًforever
وَيَميتكَand puts you to death الأَعراضrejection وَالعتبand reproach
And how long will hopes endlessly revive you,
while rejection and reproach put you to death?

وَيصدهُand keeps him عَنfrom رَحمَتيshowing me mercy العَجَبconceit
Who will grant me justice against one who sees my ruin,
yet whose conceit keeps him from showing me mercy?

وَقَضىand put an end عَلَيَّto me الوَجدlonging وَالكَربand anguish
Rejection has lasted long, and it has no cause;
and longing and anguish have undone me.
لَمdid not آتِcommit ذَنباًa sin يَقتَضيwarrants تَلفيmy ruin
أَترىdo you think المَحبةlove عِندَهُin his eyes ذَنبa sin
I have committed no sin that warrants my ruin.
Do you think love is a sin in his eyes?
وَبِمُهجَتيand with my lifeblood مِنthe one who صَدَّturned away مُحتَجِباًveiling himself

And with my lifeblood I would ransom him who turned away, veiling himself
from me, so longing and love increased.
إِزدادَgrew وَجداًin longing كُلَماwhenever كَثُرَتgrew numerous

It grew in longing whenever there were more
curtains and veils before him.

Had he not veiled himself, there would have been no enduring
of humiliation by my soul, nor any yearning in my heart.

And [unclear word in the supplied text] always guards his beauty;
passion grows sweet and makes the shedding of tears lovely.

And the noble man is not captivated by someone commonplace,
nor does he yearn for the beauty of the lowly.

If your beauty is, through safeguarding, pro—

قالَsaid الطَبيبthe physician وَقَدand had رَأىseen سَقميmy illness
هَذاthis العَليلailing man مُتَيَمٌenslaved by love صَبyearning
The physician said, having seen my illness:
This ailing man is enslaved by love and yearning;
وَدَواءُهُand his remedy قُربnearness الحَبيبto the beloved وَإِنand if
لَمdoes not يَشفِهِcure him فَرضابُهُthen his saliva العَذبsweet
and his remedy is nearness to the beloved; and if
it does not cure him, then his beloved's sweet saliva.

عزَّbecame hard to obtain الدَواءthe remedy وَأَعوَزand was lacking الطبُّmedicine
And my condition's tongue said: Alas for my sorrow!
The remedy is hard to obtain, and medicine is lacking.
هَيهاتfar from possible أَنthat يَبرىrecover عَليلone sick الهَوىwith love
إِنَّindeed المُتَيمthe love-enslaved one داؤُهُhis illness صَعبhard to cure
How far from recovery is the one sick with love!
Indeed, the love-enslaved one's malady is hard to cure.
وَإِذاand when المُحبthe lover صَفَتbecame pure سَرائِرُهُhis innermost thoughts
لَمdoes not يَشفِهِcure him بَعدdistance وَلاnor قربnearness
And when the lover's innermost thoughts are pure,
neither distance nor nearness cures him.
