Tears grew rosy from the rosy flush of his cheek.

And my body grew frail with wasting sickness from his excessive cruelty.

How often my reproacher foolishly rebuked me for loving him!

Yet had he seen him, he would have ransomed him with his lifeblood.

As though he had dwelt in Paradise and captivated the

youths and houris—or driven them mad with his form.

Then Ridwan and the angels were bewildered by him and by

his beauty, and guarded against the harm of his allure.

So they expelled him from Paradise, for fear that

the beauty of his face might win back the houris there.

And he settled on earth so that its dweller might yearn

for Paradise's gardens and those within them, on seeing him.

Not a blink of the eye since seeing him,

as though my gaze were bound to his eye.

My insides are ablaze from the coolness of his saliva,

as though my heart were burning in the fire of his cheek.

And I have not tasted it; had you tasted it, it would have healed

my heart, tormented by him, of its burning thirst.

But one day I longed for it, and it intoxicated me

with the scent of his wine, or the fragrance of his breath.

If his money belt came loose from his waist, there would fall

from it hearts he had folded beneath its knot.

He deems it too much for his phantom to visit his lovesick lover,

while I deem my ruin in loving him too little.

And part of my torment over him is that I am jealous of

his name being mentioned among his kin and family.

I fear for his cheek, should it be pictured to me by

thoughts and fancy, lest it bleed from its delicacy.

Nothing remains of my wasted heart or my body

for him to see and destroy with his coldness.

Nor are there tears left for me to weep with; indeed,

the sorrowful one's anguish is eased by his tears.
