أَفنىconsumed فُؤاديmy heart كَلفاwith infatuation
He bestowed ruin upon me;
He gifted me separation
he consumed my heart with infatuation—
And so destroyed my heart completely
ظَبيa gazelle أَغنّnasal-voiced حُسنَهُhis beauty
قطَّعtore apart قَلبيmy heart شَغفاwith passion
a nasal-voiced gazelle whose beauty
My beloved's beauty intoxicated me
tore my heart apart with passion.
And tore my heart apart in passion
لَمdid not يَبقleave مِنيof me صَدُهُhis rejection
His rejection left nothing of me
Nothing of me remained but tears
but streaming tears.
That flowed in torrents of grief
وَلَمand did not أَنَلattain فيin حُبِهِlove for him
إِلّاexcept الأَسىsorrow وَالأَسَفاand regret
And in loving him I gained nothing
And in loving him I attained
but sorrow and regret.
Only sorrow and regret
I paid him in full حَقthe due الهَوىof love
مُضاعِفاًdoubling it فَماyet not وَفىkept faith
I paid him love's due,
Yet he broke his promise of love
doubling it, yet he did not keep faith.
Repeatedly, he did not fulfill it

He has grown delicate in body, yet hard
He hardened his heart and grew cold
of heart, and supple of waist.
While my body weakened and wasted

لَماwhen تَفَرستI looked closely الجَفاcoldness
I discerned in his glances,
In his glances I discerned
when I looked closely, his coldness.
When I peered beyond the disdain

I read upon his cheeks
I read in his cheeks
his inner thoughts, through their clarity.
A conscience pure and serene
أَفديI would ransom الَّذيthe one who يَمُرُّpasses بيby me
I would ransom the one who passes by me,
I would sacrifice myself for one
angry and turning away.
Who passes me by angrily, turned away

The eyes' fixed gaze sways
Casting looks that pierce my soul
his slender-waisted form.
With a determination most resolute

All of me would ransom him—
I would ransom him whenever
what he spared and what he has destroyed.
I live on though ruined and wrecked
