    Passion filled his heart, and it split apart.

    And he called for his streaming tears, and they rushed forth.

    If you force him to give up weeping,

    Unjustly, then do not forbid him to moan in pain.

    A heart you have torn has the right to complain,

    And an eye you have kept sleepless has the right to weep.

    O you who delight in tormenting a lovesick, wasting lover,

    Who remains forever enthralled by love for you.

    You neglected one consumed by love for you, sincere

    In that love—and the lover has always remained neglected.

    And you killed a lovesick lover seeking refuge in you, who found

    No refuge from the tyranny of love's sultan.

    وَبَدا الصُدود فَكانَ مِنهُ أَوجَعا

    Your keeping yourself hidden, my lord, pained me;

    And rejection appeared and was more painful than that.

    وَالمَوت لي أَفديك أَمسى أَنفَعا

    And today separation has become more painful than both;

    And death—may I be your ransom—has become better for me.
