لَقَدindeed هانَhas become insignificant عِنديin my eyes العَدلjustice فيin جانبthe sphere of الحُبlove
وَحالَتand changed بِهِthrough it حاليmy condition فَأَنكرنيso they failed to recognize me صَحبيmy companions
Justice has indeed come to mean little to me beside love.
Through it my state changed, and my companions no longer recognized me.
وَلَمand not يَكُwas مِنof شَأنيmy custom الشِكايةcomplaining وَالبُكاand weeping
وَلَوeven if جَلَّgrew grave ماwhat أَلقىI endure فَقَدyet indeed أَصبَحاboth have become دَأبيmy habit
Complaining and weeping were never my way,
however great my suffering; yet both have become my habit.
وَماand nothing is الحُبlove إِلّاexcept مُقلةan eye دَمعَهاits tears دَمblood
وَهمٌand sorrow عَلىupon هَمٍّsorrow وَكَربٌand anguish عَلىupon كَربanguish
Love is nothing but an eye whose tears are blood,
and sorrow upon sorrow, and anguish upon anguish.
فَياso, O مَنwho لَعينfor an eye لاnot تَملُّtires مِنof البُكاweeping
وَياand O مَنwho لِقَلبfor a heart لاnot يَفيقregains its senses مِنfrom الحُبlove
Who, then, will help an eye that never tires of weeping?
And who will help a heart that never awakens from love?
يَعزُّis painful عَلىto القَلبthe heart المُتَيمenslaved by love بَعدَكُمin your absence
بِأَنيin that I أَرىI see مَنsomeone whom لاnot أَودI love إِلىat جَنبيmy side
In your absence, it grieves my love-enslaved heart
that I see someone I do not love beside me.
أَنادمهُI drink with him مُستملياًasking him to speak وَحديثهُand his talk
وَصورَتُهُand his appearance ماthat which لاdoes not يَخفweigh lightly عَلىupon قَلبيmy heart
I drink with him, asking him to speak; yet his talk
and his appearance weigh heavily on my heart.
وَليand I have سَكَنa beloved أَشهىmore delightful إِلَيَّto me حَديثُهُhis talk
مِنthan القرقفwine المَمزوجmixed بِالباردwith cool water العَذبsweet
And I have a beloved whose talk is sweeter to me
than wine mixed with cool, sweet water.
بِسائلwith one who asks عَنabout حاليmy condition وَيَصفيand keeps pure الوِدادaffection ليfor me
وَيقلقهُand troubles him بَعديmy absence وَيَرتاحand he rejoices مِنfrom قُربيmy nearness
With one who asks about my state and offers me sincere affection,
and my absence troubles him, while my nearness brings him joy.
وَلاand no عُذرexcuse لِلمُشتاقfor the yearning lover فيin هَجرforsaking الفوunclear; perhaps 'the beloved'
وَلَوeven if كانَhe were مَحجوباًscreened off بِحجبby veils مِنof القَضبswords
And the yearning lover has no excuse for forsaking [the beloved?],
even if he were screened behind veils of swords,
وَلَوeven if عُرِضَتwere placed مِنfrom دُونِهِthis side of him شقةa vast distance النَوىseparation
وَكَوبدand was painfully endured فيهاalong it كُلevery مُستَعضلintractable ordeal صَعبhard
even if the vast span of separation stood in the way,
and every hard, intractable ordeal were endured along it.
وَلَكنهُbut it is so جارacted unjustly الزَمانtime مَعwith الهَوىpassion
وَأَظهَرand displayed أَنواعforms العَداوَةenmity وَالحَربand war
But time has dealt unjustly, together with passion,
and displayed forms of enmity and war.
وَلَيسَand there is no مَعin the face of الأَقدارfate's decrees لِلمَرءfor a person حيلةrecourse
فَلاso no بُدَّescape مِنfrom شَكوىcomplaining of الخَطوبafflictions إِلىto الرَبthe Lord
And against fate's decrees a person has no recourse,
so there is no choice but to complain of afflictions to the Lord.
