My beloved gifted me a lump of clay in the bathhouse,
My beloved scented me with perfume in the bathroom
whose fragrance makes the sorrowful-hearted joyful.
Its fragrance brought my languishing heart back to life
فقلتthen I said عبيرٌperfume أنتِyou أمor مسكmusk ناشقٍone who inhales a scent
فقدfor indeed عادhas become قلبيmy heart منfrom أريجكyour fragrance نشواناintoxicated
Then I said, "Are you perfume, or musk to one who breathes you in?
I said, "Are you a gentle breeze or musk exhaling?"
For my heart has become intoxicated by your fragrance."
For your scent made my heart feel young again
فقالتthen it said لعمريby my life لمnot أكنI was غيرَother than طينةa lump of clay
ولكنْand yet جليسيmy companion أصبحbecame الوردَthe rose أحياناat times
Then it said, "By my life, I was nothing but a lump of clay,
She said, "By my life, I'm nothing but clay
but at times my companion was the rose.
Yet my companion, the rose, scents me sometimes
فأثَّرso it had an effect بيon me طيبfragrance الجليسthe companion كماjust as ترىyou see
وand إلاotherwise فذاكthen that الطِينthe clay أصليmy original substance كماjust as كاناit was
So my companion's fragrance left its mark on me, as you see;
So the fragrance of my friend affected me, as you see
otherwise, that clay is my original substance, just as it was."
Otherwise that clay is still my origin, as it was
