عارفٌ عافَ مسلك النُّسك للعلـ

عارفٌ عافَ مسلك النُّسك للعلـ

ـم   وخلى  رفاق  ذاك  الطريق

ـم وخلى رفاق ذاك الطريق

A mystic forsook the path of asceticism for knowledge,

He knew the path of asceticism for knowledge

And left the companions of that path.

And left the companions of that path

قلت ما الفرق بين ذين الفريقين

قلت ما الفرق بين ذين الفريقين

إذ   اخترت  نهج  هذا  الفريق

إذ اخترت نهج هذا الفريق

I asked, "What is the difference between those two groups,

I said what is the difference between these two groups

Since you have chosen the way of this group?"

When you have chosen the path of this group

قال  لي  همُّ  ذاك تنجيةُ النفس

قال لي همُّ ذاك تنجيةُ النفس

وذا     همّه     نجاة    الغريق

وذا همّه نجاة الغريق

He told me, "The former's concern is saving one's own soul,

He said to me their concern is saving the soul

While the latter's concern is rescuing the drowning."

And his concern is saving the drowning
