قال المنافس أنت رَبّ تكبّرِ
أوماand do you not تحاذرyou fear منof تهكمmockery مزدرa scorner
أوما تحاذر من تهكم مزدر
The rival said, “You are a master of pride.
The opponent said you are arrogant
And do you not fear a scorner’s mockery?”
Or don't you fear being scorned and belittled
فأجبتso I replied شعريmy poetry للتكبّرfor pride باعثٌan incentive
فأجبت شعري للتكبّر باعثٌ
قُلsay مثلَlike قوليmy words ثمthen لاdo not تتكبرyou act arrogantly
قُل مثلَ قولي ثم لا تتكبر
So I replied, “My poetry gives me cause for pride.
So I replied my poetry inspires arrogance
Utter words like mine, then do not be proud.”
Say the likes of my words, then don't be arrogant
