زانَ جَناني عَطنٌ مُغضَفِ
When Jumādā withholds her rain,
When the clouds withhold their rain
a leafy watering-place adorns my gardens,
My garden is filled with a musty dampness

thick-grown, its towering palms draped in drooping fronds,
Overgrown and unkempt it spills over
dark as a forest, densely overgrown.
As black as the woods, darkened and obscured

An abundant flow surges throughout its bounds,
It teems across its expanse, overflowing
with moringa trees and thickets along its two banks.
With the exuberance and vivacity of its youth
