    My heart longs for Malikah—if only

    she were at evening near the one who seeks her!

    How lovely are Malikah's neck and

    throat-hollows, as her breastbones adorn her!

    Would that I were with her one night, when people slumber,

    and their owner has lulled the dogs to sleep,

    on a night when no one can be seen

    spying on us except its stars.

    وَلتَبكِني قَهوَةٌ وَشارِبُها

    Let a singing girl and her lute weep for me;

    and let wine and its drinker weep for me;

    وَغابَ في سَردَحٍ مَناكِبُها

    and let a she-camel weep for me when she sets out

    and her shoulders vanish into a broad plain;

    and let a band weep for me: when it gathers,

    people do not know what will come of it.

    What, then, do souls hope to gain by seeking

    good, when love of life deceives them?
